Description
Almost the namesake of the ancient Greek Nike Apteros, the wingless Nike goddess statue from the Athenian Temple. Pyrrhocoris apterus (Linnaeus, 1758), also known as Firebug. So, "apterus" means "wingless", its name reflects the fact that their hindwings are usually absent. I mean the rear pair of flying wings, because the forewings became elytra (wing casing) — these teardrop-shaped flat "petals" on the bug's back with a rounded black spots. The Hi-Resolution (6297×4162 px) PNG file is available (Download button above)
