Description
It has come to my attention that some new readers are curious yet totally baffled by this thing called Puck, and may find the prospect of reading through 100+ strips daunting. Therefore, I've created this handy character rundown for the cast. The comic really only has a four-person (plus extras) cast, but the relationships between those four characters are complicated, so I'm hoping this clarifies some stuff for the confused people out there.
Some may note that I've finally nailed down ages and time frames after much waffling. Seven years have passed since Puck graduated; her degree was three years long. Because she was 621 at the beginning of the strip, she's now 631.
It all makes sense. I think.
EDIT: I bumped up all the characters' weights due to numerous complaints by people who insist that Puck cannot weigh 124 lbs and be 5'8". Even though my wife weighs 124 lbs. and is 5'8". Go fig.

I prefer less exposition, I don't need to know every detail of a character or a story to enjoy it. The only time it's really needed is for in jokes and running gags.

True enough. My mind seems to gravitate toward in jokes and running gags, though. Curse my mind.

Well, TOO much realism turns me off. I like a healthy shot of ridiculous in my comics, but if I'm sort of presenting a twisted slice-of-life type comic, then it helps if I can establish a consistency in the models and their size relations. As for fish with underwater lakes, hey. If it happens in Spongebob, it can happen anywhere!

Thanks! I was kinda confused. I was also wondering...
There's a character that I have invented named Maggie. She's 13 years old, and a tall pale girl with fiery auburn hair and beautiful blue-grey eyes, with a calm but dangerous aura. I have commissioned my friends and family to cameo her in their art (I come from a LONG line of artists) to see if she is a good choice for my new series. So I was hoping that you would try cameoing her? Pretty Please?

ElectricGecko In reply to PhoenixForce77 [2011-10-08 00:55:26 +0000 UTC]
Well, there really aren't many opportunities for cameos in the comic, because it's a pretty closed cast. I don't usually do crowd scene or that sort of thing. If an opportunity comes up, I'll consider it, but it's not likely in the immediate future.

Oh, Gecko. Dearest Gecko. Not you, too.
It has come to my attention over the past year that many male writers/artists/people seem terribly confused about how much women actually weigh. If Puck is 5'8" and only weighs 124 lbs, she is a hair's breadth away from being clinically underweight (even for someone who is *not* pregnant). At 5'4" and 96 lbs, Daphne is right smack dab in the middle of "and how long have you had this disorder" land. Phoebe's weight is perfectly within the normal range for a woman her height (with a small frame). And it's not that I'm saying any of these designs should change. No, you drew them just fine. I'm saying that, if they actually weighed the weights listed for them, they would look very different from the way you've drawn them. Especially Daphne. She'd be a skeleton. Here's a chart: [link]
I point this out as a friend in hopes of helping you surpass your male peers in this regard.

ElectricGecko In reply to jansLabyrinth [2011-10-07 01:49:57 +0000 UTC]
Okay, here's my defense: my wife is 5'8", and her build is very similar to Puck's. She generally weighs in the 120's. (And the listed weight is definitely not pregnant weight.) Phoebe's a bit more mesomorph in her build, so I put the weight up a bit. (My wife's the one who told me that Phoebe would weigh somewhere in the 130's. I trust her.) Daphne is NOT an adult yet, and she's got that thin, whippet-type build that hasn't filled out yet. I really don't think (how I've drawn her) that she'd weigh much over a hundred pounds. I mean, I teach thin high school BOYS who don't weigh much more than 96 lbs. But I'd like to hear your perspective on the weights, so that I might possibly fix any horrible errors.

jansLabyrinth In reply to ElectricGecko [2011-10-07 02:11:02 +0000 UTC]
Puck can weigh in the 120s. I was pointing out that 124 is the lower threshold for her height. As for Daphne, a girl her age and height should weigh 105 lbs at least . As a woman with a mesomorph figure (who is 2 inches shorter than Daphne), I can attest to the fact that my cheek bones were incredibly define and lean when I weight 145. It's not really a matter of perspective: it's how gravity works. :')

Skinny for their height? As in the weight is low? Well, my wife's 5'8", and her build is similar to Puck, and her weight is similar. Colin's got a thin sort of build, and at 5'10", most thin-type guys are in the 170's. My dad's one of them.
Everyone's skinny in the comics. Well, except for those characters that aren't skinny.

Ah... I was just thinkin' at 5'4" and 96 pounds Daphne should be looking more like a skeleton; and at 120 lbs, I'd expect sweet Robin herself to be more like 5'2"... In any case, she's in good shape for a dame well over 600 years old.

ElectricGecko In reply to vanilla-vanilla [2011-10-08 01:13:41 +0000 UTC]
Well, seeing as you're the THIRD person to get all disbelieving about the weight, I may round the figures up a little. But for the record, my wife IS actually 5'8", has Puck's build, and weighs around 124 lbs. The Daphne weight is one that may possibly be on the low side, but really, not by much. She's 14, and she hasn't filled out yet, so those early adolescent rangy kids can be rather tall for their weight. But if the grief keeps coming, I guess I just have to accept that the numbers need to change for the sake of peace. (Note that I don't acknowledge that I'm wrong. Because I'm not. I just want to make people happy, and if giving my characters GROSSLY INACCURATE weights achieves that, then I'm game.)

Well, that's ... unusual. In my wife's family, all the kids are TALL tall. Her dad is a pretty short guy (maybe 5'6"? 5'7"?) and my wife's 5'8", her sister's 5'8" and a half, and her brother is 6'2" or something like that. Not sure where the height came from, but they all dwarf him.

This is probably a weird reaction but I was immediately struck by how SMALL they all are (or are alleged to be, since they're fictional, obviously). I mean I weigh about the same as any TWO of the females and 70+ pounds more than the dude, plus I'm a couple of inches taller than him. On top of this, I'M starting to feel like a little guy compared to these kids I see strolling the malls nowadays.
Anyhow, they are certainly a nice, svelte crew and this is a helpful guide.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ElectricGecko In reply to Huwman [2011-10-06 21:35:25 +0000 UTC]
Well, Puck and Phoebe are actually reasonably tall for girls at 5'8". Colin is average at 5'10". I, too, am a few inches taller than him, but I made him that height mostly for convenient conversation shots. It's harder to do when characters are drastically different heights. He's a thin guy, too; my dad's about the same build and height and he's usually somewhere in the 170's.
From personal experience, it's shocking to find out how much weight a few inches of height can add. The height difference is usually all in the thighs, which are also the heaviest parts of the body.
But yes, svelte they are, I guess. And yes, kids are getting super-sized these days. Dang growth hormones.

Huwman In reply to ElectricGecko [2011-10-07 00:06:26 +0000 UTC]
Yes, it makes sense to have them all roughly the same height so someone's head isn't always getting cut out of the panel.
I guess we're a fairly large family. Our "baby" is about 6'3" now! Come to think of it, my dad was bigger than his dad and I'm a LOT bigger than he was and my kids are both taller than me (not nearly as thick though, which is probably good). Most families we know have followed the same pattern but it can't go on forever, I guess.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ElectricGecko In reply to Huwman [2011-10-07 01:33:03 +0000 UTC]
Well, at 6'3", that's pretty tall. I mean, I'm six feet exactly, and I don't think of myself as especially tall, but when I look around me, there aren't many people taller than me. I think, though, that if you fast forward another century or so, even 6'3" will seem short. I mean, average height for men in the middle ages was close to five feet. (Back in Rome, though, where basic needs were generally taken care of, they were more our height, so go fig.)
