Probably should share the model I'm using as my profile picture: LAGEOS-1. Launched in 1976, this is one of the few passive satellites in orbit. It has no moving parts or electronics. Rather, it has a very regular orbit that can be used as a benchmark for laser ranging geodynamical studies.LAGEOS-1 is very dense and covered in 426 retroreflectors. You can bounce a laser off the reflectors and use the travel time to determine positions on the Earth with extreme accuracy.
