Not all graphics “freely found” on the internet are not automatically free to use or collect into albums to share with others. I know it's tempting to think this - given the nature of the internet and how easy it is to find things with Google or deviantART.
Often they are lovingly hand-crafted by a talented artist. You should credit them and link back to their website. (I mean, if they say so on their terms-of-use!)
Saying “if you want this taken down, please ask” is really lazy. For one, once the art is already being shared, the damage is already done. The original artist is long forgotten. Yes, that’s how I feel because I am a pixel artist.
Sure I would like it if my creations were enjoyed by people, but I don’t want to be ignored in the process. That's why I ask for back-links. That's why I'd love to hear from you if you like my work! I'd love to hear from you if you want to do something with it. I'm a flesh and blood human! Maybe after I'm long dead I won't care so much with what people do with my art.
Besides, I do not have the time and energy to go around asking everyone to remove my artwork (which, in some cases, was paid for) from every page. If you are so keen on sharing hoards of art with other people, please consider creating a directory of links to your favourite creators.
I know it’s probably hard to track down the original artist of every piece, but it’s the fair thing to do. If you can’t create art/graphics/etc yourself because you think it’s difficult, won’t you understand why it’s important to thank artists?
I'm not saying this to be mean and stop people from having fun on the internet. This is coming from my own feelings and wanting my work to be respected.
I realise there's no internet police, and I can't stop everyone. But I would like at least for some people to read this and try.
