Chapter 4 Meeting of the HierarchyLlorak sat up straight in his chair. He looked like a cat walking on its hind legs and had hands that were human, but fury. There was a long line of tiny spikes on his back, they were all clustered about and poisoned. He was a Kroan who was supposed to be a wise person, but deadly in a fight. “Welcome, Priest Nuin.” He said and smiled at me. “I am pleased you accepted the invitation.”
“It wasn’t much of an invitation, as it was an order.” I replied and seated myself at the round table. “Besides, I’ve always wanted to come into this room.” I looked around and saw all the silver that made up the walls and the pictures, pictures that were worth fortunes.
“Everyone wants to come here.” He replied and nodded. “It is a great room, full of order. Order that might need to be repeated on the rest of the ship.” Llorak turned and saw Archon entering.
She was wearing a flight suit and her eyes burned a fire that was so vengeful, it was full of anger and hate. She bowed to Llorak and smiled at me. I turned my head and pretended to look at a painting, I didn’t want her love. If Archon was trying to get me, I wouldn’t let her. I would hold strong and not let anything touch me, nothing of hers.
“Nuin, I’m sorry about Krystal’s death.” She said. “I understand how hard it must be for you.”
“It is hard for me,” I replied with kindness I did not feel. “And I thank you for your pity, I really do.”
She nodded at this and turned as High Priest Mizak entered the room. We all stood up and bowed as he came to the table. He held out his hands and blessed us and then sat down. “So, Nuin, you came.” He said and smiled. “I’m glad you took my offer.”
“I had no choice, my honor was at stake.” I said to him and he nodded. Mizak knew, as well as I, that to refuse apprenticeship of that magnitude was unheard of. He was allowing me to take my final steps to become High Priest. These final steps would be given out by Mizak himself. “I am loyal to my Order.”
“And I am very glad about that.” Then Mizak turned to Llorak. “What are your plans for the order of this ship?”
“The Last Chance is Archon’s ship.” Llorak replied. “She will have final say. That is what I think.” Archon nodded at him but Mizak frowned.
“But shouldn’t I have final say?” He asked. “I am High Priest of Elixir Foin.” Llorak growled at that.
“Sola is no more.” He replied. “Elixir Foin is no more. Your power will start to wane and your rank will mean nothing.”
“But what if I told you Elixir has an heir?” Mizak asked. “An heir that will follow in his father’s footsteps.”
“Excuse me, Mizak, but this heir won’t be powerful enough for awhile.” Archon replied.
“I will not give up service to Foin!” He yelled. “My loyalty is to him!”
“High Priest, calm.” Llorak said. “We all know how loyal you are to him, but you will lose power now. But if you look for another god, or goddess, your power will grow. Until Elixir Foin’s heir reaches age, the Order of Elixir Foin will be no more.”
“You can’t do that!” Mizak yelled. “You can’t do that!”
“Mizak, if I may.” I said and he looked angrily at me, but still nodded. “There are gods and goddesses that Elixir Foin has sanctioned as sacred, we could worship them and still retain our identities.”
Mizak nodded at what I had said. “But I still won’t give up my title.”
“That is not what is needed.” Llorak agreed. “But your rank will not give you supreme power over this ship.”
“The High Priests of Elixir Foin have always ruled wisely.” Archon said. “I see no reason in having Mizak at least be an advisor.”
“Yes.” I replied. “But you, Llorak, can be ruler of the Last Chance. Archon can then be ruler of battles.”
“I agree that that’s a good plan.” Llorak replied. “But I don’t want total power. I suggest the making of a council. The Council of Remnants. This council would be in power until we reach a planet to call home.”
“Who should be ruler of this council?” Archon asked. “We each have our separate duties, but we need an overseer.”
“I say that Priest Nuin should be the ruler of the Council of Remnants.” Mizak said and everyone agreed. I was just stunned. Me, Nuin, was being given a place of power. I hoped this wasn’t just a power play. Mizak was having me succeed him; Archon loved me and wanted to see me rise; and Llorak probably sensed some wisdom in me. Each would have their own reasons for choosing me. I wish I knew for sure.
“I will gladly take that station.” I replied and turned to each of them. “I will not abuse this power that you have given me, I will lead with honesty.”
“I would expect no less.” Mizak replied. “My successor would not be chosen for anything less. I trust you fully. I suggest a new title for Priest Nuin.”
“Yes, a new title.” Llorak agreed. “I would suggest Voice.”
“Yes, he is now the voice of the people.” Archon agreed. “He is the voice of all our hearts and I believe he will treat us well.”
I was now going to be the Voice of the Solans. Inside myself, I felt an inner glow at that title. Voice Nuin, leader of the Council of Remnants. I would be ruling alongside Mizak, a man I had admired since I had first come to the Temple of Sola. “May I suggest a formal ceremony later?” I asked. “Just to bring this to the people’s attention?”
“Yes, there will be a ceremony.” Llorak replied. “And you must get used to giving orders, Voice.”
“Then we will now discuss Elixir Foin’s heir, whom I have named Nixar.” I said and watched as they started to listen eagerly.
Author’s Note: Ah, now Nuin’s part becomes greater. The Council of Remnants sounds cool, at least to me. I was thinking of the rank as Master, but that was too dull. I wanted something full of power. I tried making up a name but then decided to use ‘Voice’. Trust me, the other word was TOO weird to use as a rank.
