Description

Here is an image I am going to post as my status for the #soundofsilencemovement protest May 1-3.  Please feel free to repost.

To be honest, I'm terribly fickle when it comes to sweeping change.  Sometimes it's fine, especially when the outcome is positive, and sometimes I'm just in a stubborn mind and wont accept changes (even good ones).  I will admit, I've been giving Eclipse an honest chance the last few days and have come to the conclusion there are a few technical aspects that are an actual improvement (the llama system is faster).  That said, I still feel Eclipse is poorly designed and the community has been marginalized in the interest of building a 'modern' website.  While the weird little type, poor page proportions,  and the inability to switch my 'home' page to my profile page (as opposed to my Recommended for you page) is very annoying, being marginalized by those who purport to listen to the community is over the line.

To me deviantART was a place where artists of all ability could share their journey with others.  Something like MySpace without all the noise (and less of the epilepsy inducing tiled GIFs).  I'm not sure deviantART really had an air of professionalism like ArtStation or Behance, but it definitely garnered a measure or two of pride from simply being part of the community.  Not to mention that even the well known artists weren't so high and mighty as to not interact with their fans and occasionally give helpful pointers.  It is a special place, more than the sum of the website.

So to be disregarded by a development team, and seemingly pushed into using an interface reeking of Wix/SquareSpace/etc templated web development is incredibly hurtful.  Especially so considering the irony of deviantART being founded for the purpose of sharing skins for ugly interfaces (WinAMP was never very pretty), and not they want it to "look like a modern website".  What does that even mean?  I'm on ArtStation, I think it's a cluttered mess and the page frame wobbles around while scrolling.  Is that modern?  Change for the sake of change is not always a good thing.  Consider this:  early trucks from Chevrolet were impossible to lock the keys inside of (my experience is with one from 1953, which all trucks from 1947 to early 1955 are more or less functionally identical).  The door locked from the inside via pushing the door handle forward, and could only be locked when the door was closed.  The key only locked/unlocked the passenger side door from the outside.  The only way I can conceive possibly being able to lock a key inside the truck is to lock the closed driver side door from inside, scoot out the passenger side door, lock the open door with the key, toss said key into the truck and close the door....maybe.  While I can agree the door handle/lock arrangement is questionable (kiddos could inadvertently open a 'locked' door while driving)  The button system on various cars in the last 50 years was not much of an improvement.  Point is, who cares if it looks like a website from 1995?  Not all websites from back then were eyesores created by designers lacking restraint.

Tl;dr --  Here is the flag I'm going to wave in protest of the hypocritical, heavy-handed manner in which the deviantART development section has been acting toward the community.  While I am against change for the sake of change, I am open to the possibility of change for the sake of an improved user experience.  I appreciate some of the framework improvements already in place, yet feel they are overshadowed by poor design.  Do something unique deviantART, don't be ArtStation by deviantART!

Well put and well written.

I agree with everything you've said here (apart from maybe the tangent with the car doors. ^^)

I'm not sure how much impact boycotting the site will have but it's worth a try to get the admin team to listen.

A bigger impact could be to get people to cancel their rolling subscriptions, which I'm going to do right now.

I've tried out Eclipse a bit since the announcement.

I find everything to be too big (thumbnails which are almost as big as the full picture), with no way to adjust it as far as I can see.

If you don't upload hi-res photos as your art then everything looks crap.

Anyway, good luck with the boycott. ^^

If by looking like a website from 1995 you mean functional and user-friendly then yes!

I've slowly watched the Internet go to shit over the past 10 years…

..I'm with you on this, tried Eclipse didn't like it at all. Apparently though, on the 20th of next month that will be the only choice we have.  I agree that some things just don't need "fixing" because they are not broke.

Also have been regular at Daz3D for going on 13 years and experienced a similar situation when they went to Magento.  Everything went to drek as the product and forums search are so horrible to the point of being useless. The Art Zone disappeared as did many helpful PDF tutorials.  The New gallery setup is rubbish.  The old galleries stressed putting your best work forward as all submissions were critiqued.  The galleries also rotated each month with the best from each month going into an separate gallery.  Now it's just a mishmash and browsing is more of a chore than a pleasure.

Change for the sake of change is not always the best, particularly when what you already have works just fine.

...just like with Microsoft.  Windows 7 was a very good stable OS.

They could have just stayed with that basic model, but no, "let's make a one size fits all OS for every type of device from smartphones to workstations, make it cumbersome, give it useless features, and a butt ugly UI to boot while taking away tools and features users have come to depend on." Even after the 8.1 "fix", W7 still maintained a major portion of the market share (even well into the W10 era).  One would think they learned from that mistake (particularly after Vista), but no, they proceeded to make things even worse with force fed feature updates, useless features tied into the OS core functions (like Cortana), bundled security updates (so you had to take the buggy ones with the good), kept that putrid "Fisher Price" UI as the default, and came up with the "Windows as a Service" rubbish.

There is a reason people like myself held out and have stayed with W7 even after they pulled the plug in January, as it wasn't "broke" and still works just fine.

...yeah it works perfectly for me.  I don't need a lot of useless bells & whistles or "features" I don't need that are integrated into the OS core code (like Cortana which I refer to as the evil spawn of Bob and Clippy).  An OS should simply do one thing, support the software one uses. not throw a bunch of fluff and rubbishware at your system along with those 6 month interruptions for features I don't need and would have to remove all over again.

As a CG artist, one serious issue I have with 10 is that WDDM reserves a noticeable portion of GPU VRAM (about 18%) which means you have less for rendering. (suddenly that 1,200$ 11 GB RTX 2080 Ti only has 9 GB available for rendering).  The only way to get around it is with a much more expensive Quadro or Titan series which allow you to switch to TCC mode.

That said, I have a very hefty AV that businesses use which is behind a very beefy firewall and VPN.  My internal network and Net connection are also hardwired.

...yeah pretty much in the same boat as most graphics software doesn't support Linux (some have been trying to get Daz to work under Wine but it tends to be very hit and miss with the emphasis on "miss").  That is also part of why I'm still on W7 along with the fact that W10's WDDM reserves a significant chunk of GPU VRAM on all Nvida GPUs unless you have a new Titan or Quadro which can be switched into TCC mode or a Tesla which is automatically set to compute mode

Llamas are faster? That's the example thing that's better?

Shit. I stopped using llamas once I found out people just used bots/services to send them out by the masses. I never "llama back" anymore.

I use a program to be able to give llamas automatically by clicking in the user's name, so if that is the only thing that's better it doesn't really adds anything for me, especially because they hid the badges in eclipse when they used to be on top of the page and well visible on the old version which I liked because I like to collect them.

Same here on collecting badges (although, I'm kind of hit and miss at it).  I did finally find them, they are hidden in that About box on the Profile page.

I gave it a fair try too for a few days and there are certain aspects I like. The things I like though are extremely minimal compared to the aspects that make the site so much worse and annoying to use. I like having the option of a 'recommended for you' home page, as I like not having to scroll through extreme fetish art every day just to see new art, but that's about it. Pretty much everything else is NOT an improvement. The classic layout is not only perfectly fine as it is, but it's iconic. It's a big part of the site's identity. I don't understand why they can't just add new features without trying so hard to be Artstation.

I've loved DA for over a decade now but it's not the portfolio site that I show to employers and it never will be. I use Artstation to get jobs and I use DA to engage with my audience and given the nature of content on this site, that's how I plan to keep things.
