"Concentrate and focus on the burning energy inside this shard of crystal," Sepius' voice echoed in Lundin's mind as he gripped the shard of red crystal in his forefoot. He could sense the energy, it was like an overwhelming inferno, but he fought past the barrier and connected with it for a brief moment. Suddenly, there was a searing sensation throughout his body from snout to tail, and a small hot flash of fire flickered out from the upward facing palm of his other foot.

Just as fast as the energy had come however, all of it seeped away and Lundin dropped out of the sky, crumpling in the sand from the wave of absolute exhaustion that gripped him.

"It is too hard for you to connect with an element you are not naturally attuned to," Sepius told him as Lundin lay gasping for breath on the desert ground. "But I think I know a way that we can modify this raw fire energy so that you can wield it better."

"Really?" Lundin asked, standing and shaking the sand out of his feathers. "How?"
