===========
Viren was disappointed. No humans in sight so far in the cave, but further investigation into it’s shallow depths revealed that her little shelter was just a part of many. A narrow passage she could just squeeze through led into another chamber, and perhaps more.
Belongings of humans were scattered about, as well as a few concerning bones at her hooves, they were small though, and Viren assured herself that perhaps it was that of rabbits or other small animals. Her inspection of this area found nothing much aside from dust, moss, damp stones, and the distinct scent of mud and mold.
“Must be something left around here? Maybe food?”
She wasn’t hungry, not after eating so many berries and herbs, but getting a snack for her trip out of snowy, mountainous terrain didn’t sound half bad. The roan mare then went about pawing at anything covered in dust or moss, any suspicious mounts, left behind detritus, jars, bowls, and old furs. One pile seemed to be some shelter of sorts the humans fashioned, with a burnt-out pit of charcoal.
Her mother often said specks of light on the distant hills were a sign of humans and their camps, harnessing fire to do their bidding. Horses hadn’t learned how to do the same, or at least not her herd. Sticking her face towards the shelter and sniffing around didn’t uncover much, so she used her mouth to pull the shelter away from its resting spot, dropping it without a care onto the damp cave floor and trotting around the discarded structure to investigate what was hidden under it.
To her dismay it wasn’t much, more broken or weathered two legged things, more strange tools they fashioned, and an intact pot or two. She let out a soft groan, going to spin back towards the way she came, before spotting a bright blue splash of color. The entrance filtered just enough light for her to pick it out, and she was glad she did. A small clay bowl of paints was left, and upon curiously testing the paints worth with a blade of dried grass, she found it was fresh.
“Oh, something worthwhile!”
However, the freshness of the paint had the mare a bit more cautious on just how old this camp was, and after a cautionary ear swivel to listen, and some glances around, she decided not to linger. Gathering up the find, she went to trot quietly as she could, back to the narrow passage to the main cave opening. She wedged her body through the gap at a speedier pace, before taking once last look at the shelter, and stepping back into the snow. There were no concerning sounds from the mountain, threatening more avalanches, and she’d calmed enough to continue above ground. Certainty, Vi knew, it wasn’t good to stick in one place alone, not with signs of humans and threats looming ever so close.
Her speed was steady in a trot as she made her way west, away from the dark ridge of mountains at her back, and where the trees grew shorter and thinner.
