Before Katsu and Scout had properly learned fire magic, they had to use matches for things like lighting candles and stoves. Now they had been left forgotten in the bottom of a drawer.

Cadence had heard about these little sticks that light on fire when you struck the end against the side of the box. She fished out the matchbox and after a few failed attempts, managed to light one.

For awhile, all she could do was stare at the little flame on the match until it burnt itself out.

It was the prettiest thing.
