That big Consolidation working around a yard. I have yet to ride behind her, but she looks quite fun! It reminds me a little of the TSRR #300!

She is a great engine! Powerful and loud!

It actually depresses me a bit, having lived in Maryland all my childhood and I never ONCE got to ride behind the 734. I even went to Cumberland and was right at the station. It was running that day and I was even able to see it. It certainly has earned its nickname!

But sadly I was there for a bike trail and not for the train. Although after that the rest of the scouts in our troop understood my fixation of steam engines!

She's a wonderful engine to ride behind or watch trackside. She always puts on a show! Any time 734 is running, I'm usually not far off! I highly recommend a trip on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad! It's also fun to ride the train up (with bike aboard) , and then bike down the mountain.

The closest I came to 734 was on a scout trip YEARS ago. We biked all the way down from Cumberland to the Paw Paw tunnel. Sadly I didn't have enough strength or energy left and couldn't finish despite there only being 4 or so miles left to go. Good thing we had a guy "follow" us via truck to pick up guys like myself. It was still REALLY fun regardless! And before we left Cumberland on the trail the 734 was up on the tracks above us. Since the rest of the troop saw that engine and watched it idol for a while they all understood my obsession about steam engines after that.
They had no choice but to admit they are awesome.

That's usually how I convince my friends trains (especially steam) are awesome! I bring them to the Western Maryland Scenic to see 734!

734 puts up quite a convincing argument, don't it?

But every pop, sizzle or noise that engine makes, my friends stand behind me for cover (i guess, they think "If he (me) thinks it's safe, he won't mind protecting me from scalding steam")

I find that rather amusing, though their 'fear of the unknown' is warranted. Steam Locomotives are pressure vessels.

But in my case 734 was at least 2 stories above us, but even at a distance at least everyone understood my fascination with steam then.

Very much so, indeed, being she is very large for her wheel arrangement.

This is true, but the 2-8-0 wheel arrangement should never be underestimated! The PRR's H10s were impressive despite their realitively small size. Shoot, BLI's HO model hauled several real life bricks without sweating!!

True. The Western Maryland's H-9 2-8-0s where the most developed of the type. O. S. Nock (RWC IV, plate 169) calls these engines "one of the highest developments of the 2-8-0 type anywhere in the world."

Consolidations are just very versatile locomotives. I mean they're EVERYWHERE! And I mean that in a good way. They're one of my favorites, often seen on many narrow gauge railroads also. After seeing BLI's PRR model operate I've been wanting to add one of their other 2-8-0 offerings to my HO collection. (Probably Great Northern since I draw some inspiration from them anyway for my ER&W) I think they use the same chassis, looks identical to their PRR H10 offering so I imagine the performance would be the same or similar.
