Along with forty full-page illustrations, it is a fantasy novel where a man has set himself up as God in his empire. One of the three main magic systems is that when a man of a particular family tree (headed by the eponymous Patriarch) dies, their spirit and mind is forced into the body of their oldest living son, consuming their soul, and killing him. This cycle of death and rebirth these men become effectively immortal, so long as they have souls of their sons to devour.

The story follows three characters, a pair of fraternal twins and their best childhood friend. These children must struggle and learn to grow to be their own people, rather than a tool of the church or state. Both as victims and victimizers. They must learn the hard way that while all of us are children of our fathers.

There can only ever be one Patriarch.
