Have you taken a look at the Gen I sprites recently? Blue looks like an OK kid, Red on the other hand looks like an arrogant asshat who thinks he can take on the world. I'd say it's justified.

Have you read the text spoken in Gen I recently? Blue's text sounds pretty dang arrogant and at one point it gets kinda creepy, like when keeps to his promise of "smelling you later" once you beat him in Cerilian (it's spelled something like that). While Red has absolutely no text. Not to be rude but you can't always judge a cup of joe by the mug it sits in.

when a trainer beats the current champion, that trainer become the new champion.
So right after Blue gets the champ title, Red goes to take it from him.

In the original two pokemon games (Red and Blue), Your character, Red, (Ash in the anime, but aside from looking the same, they are nothing similar personality wise.) has a rival named Blue. (Gary was ash's in the anime) Most of the time when people fight Blue, they usually win 90-100% of the time, so it's become a running gag in the pokemon fandom of Blue being beaten multiple times.
