Entry for a show on Instagram featuring Ally and Hero <3 This took me much longer than I wish it did, but I’m proud of it!! Always love drawing Hero <3 while writing the story, I realized I’ve owned Hero for a little more than over a year now. I didn’t even realize how much time has passed this horse is truly specialA story:
“So you saw it right? The picture I sent to your phone?” Ally spoke into the device held up to her ear, a smile written across her face, the sun piercing into her vision as she looked up at the giant, 112 foot Buddha. “Yeah, it looks fucking awesome, Al”. A sense of sadness emerged in Jenna’s voice. Ally noticed, dropping her head down, the smile slowly fading from her face.
“Hey, I know you couldn’t make it, with work and all” Ally paused, both girls taking a breath, nearly 8,000 miles away from each other. “The next venue, I’ll find the money to pay for your ticket, I promise. Someone needed to take care of the horses anyway.”
“I know, but Gunner could have done it. Keep sending me pictures, please. I wanna see Hero, too.” Jenna re-emerged with more happiness in her voice. Ally nodded, “I will, I will. I’ll call you in a few days, after my round. Love you Jermy.” Ally smiled again. “Bye, Ally”.
Jenna ended the call. Ally and Jenna’s friendship had always been rocky, full of mixed signals and mood swings. Maybe it was Ally’s fault she was often very sensitive, or Jenna’s bluntness at times. Ally tried her best to push the lack of reciprocity in the friendship past her, continuing to enjoy the view of the bronze Buddha. In shorts and a plain tank top, the humidity of Hong Kong still managed to make her uncomfortable with heat. It was beautiful here though, none of her surroundings felt real, and the idea that’d she be competing just a few miles away from the statue later that week seemed more like a dream.

Ally had arrived to Hong Kong earlier than the rest of her SJ team, leaving her plenty of time to be a tourist. She had already visited the Buddha, walked through Nan Lian Garden and visited the Harbour. It was amazing how much she could get done while traveling alone, but a small pit of loneliness sitting right in her stomach had accompanied her on this whole trip, so maybe she wasn’t actually alone. She had visited Hero every night before she went to the hotel, making sure he was being taken care of and brushing him if needed. Before heading off to the hotel for an early night-in, she had decided to check on him again. Peeking her head into the stall, Hero lay on the stall floor, ears relaxed, eating hay off the floor. Ally smiled. The sight of the bay horse had brought her so much joy every time she’s seen him since she bought him in January 2020. She couldn’t believe she had already owned him for a year now.
Ally entered his stall quietly. He peeked his head up from his focus on the hay, nickering slightly when he realized who had visited him. A sense of relaxation absorbed Ally, as she ran her hand up and down his stripe and itched behind his ears. She couldn’t believe how much he had learned from such a short time of having him. The idea she’d be participating in her first Grand Prix in years had filled with her so much anxiety, she thought she’d vomit before she came to Hong Kong, but it felt a little easier knowing it’d be on Hero. As soon as the empty feeling left, it came back. That dark, deep pit in her chest. She wondered if the feeling would ever go away, and she hoped she’d only be able to ignore it long enough to do well in her round.
