These tests were actually testing the virus/the infection, and he was one of ten to get out alive after the loss of at least another sixty 'guinea pigs' killed by guards. Later ran into Toby, who was running from a severely triggered witch. Killed the witch, saving Toby's life, and then the friendship developed.
