Description A quick look at the once contraversial, but now iconic, dystopian tale by Anthony Burgess. Written over the course of three weeks, the story was inspired partly by Burgess' first wife getting beaten by some drunken US servicemen back during WW2, and partly by the growing fear of youth culture in the UK at the time. This latter part seems to be something of a running thread in various dystopian works, Akira for example was inspired by the similar fear of juvenile delinquency in Japan's economic boom in the 1980s and 90s.

Interestingly, the film adaptation by Stanley Kubrick was actually banned in the UK for several years at the director's own request, due to a series of copycat crimes allegedly inspired by the movie. Though how much the connected events were actually inspired by the film or whether it was just a convenient scapegoat is up for debate, as people seem to latch onto any one thing to blame whenever murder occurs.
