I don't now if you know the site ? The monument is very close to the coast and usually there's no water around it.
I looked up the high-tide in Vierville-sur-Mer on the internet and planned my journey accordingly. It was rather early in the morning and the light was very beautiful.. I stood on the steps leading to the beach. So I really planned this shot to try and be there at the right moment...

I shoot digital, so indeed I do make a color "basic"-file of every image. But helas; color photography is just not my "thing"

well, for this kind of long exposures, the color might be really tricky and also might cause problems. This long exp. black and white photos have build great artistic approach and mood.
Sometimes this kind of shots knows to be overwhelmed with really similar scenes, but in this image, as you say, you have to be in the right time to see the monument within the water, which makes this moment surreal, and original.
