“Do you always pick fights with those bigger than you?”

It’s a soft tease, one that causes Steve to chuckle as you take the seat beside him. “I don’t like bullies,” He replies, casting you a glance.

“None of us do.”

An easy silence falls between the two of you, not that you minded. These moments shared were special regardless of what happens. You weren’t a military person by any means, but being a Stark gave you a certain … leeway. Your brother, Howard, helped create the superhuman serum and in a way, so did you. Which is why keeping a close eye on the man beside you is important.

“What brings you to a place like this?” Steve peers at you curiously, lips tugging into a warm smile.

You shrug in reply, “Figured you’d be here.”

“What, spending enough time at camp isn’t enough for you?” He nudges you playfully and you can’t help but laugh.

“It’s not that,” You move, placing one leg over the other as you look at him fully, “Howard wants to make sure there’s no side effects. Not that we’ve witnessed any yet, but-”

“You can’t be too sure.”

“Exactly.” Steve has always been understanding. Through everything from the procedure to afterwards, he has listened and empathized. You have never met a better man. “But between us,” You lean forward a bit, “I prefer to think of this as us getting to know each other better.”

“You mean like a date?” He raises a brow, unable to hide his growing smile.

Your eyes soften as you stare deeply into his eyes. “It’s whatever you want it to be, Rogers.”

The memory of that night is still fresh in his mind. To him, it happened less than a year ago. For you, it happened over fifty years ago. It was hard for him to admit that. When he woke up in that room, his first thought was of you. Always you. Then the music, the woman, the feel of the bed. He didn’t know it immediately, but he was a man out of time.

It was coincidental, maybe fate. He misplaced his compass and eventually, Tony came to him. His usual arrogance washed away with something Steve couldn’t quite place. “They miss you,” Tony said, taking a long look at the compass before passing it off to him. “You should go see them.”

There’s no word to describe the way he feels now. His deep-blue eyes bore into the hardwood door. He can hear music on the other side, something jazz related. The longer he stands there, the more guilty he feels. With shaky hands, he knocks.

“Come in.” There’s no mistaking your voice. No matter how many years have passed, he knows its you that stands on the other side.

He grips the knob, twisting it open and slowly pushes the door open. You don’t look back at him, too busy gazing out the window as you rock back-in-forth. He swallows his tears and clears his throat. “[NAME]?” You freeze, body tensing as Steve takes a cautious step forward.

Scared and unsure, you turn in your chair and look back at him. “Steve?” You try to stand, knees wobbling as you do while tears form in your eyes. “You’re alive… You’re here. How?”

“I was frozen,” He chuckles, despite the lack of humor. “Seems there are some side affects of the serum. It saved my life.”

You can’t help but stare at him. Taking in every little detail. The man you love is back, but unlike you, he hasn’t changed. He still looks the same, still sounds the same. If you weren’t of sound mind, you would think you were hallucinating.

“How did you find me?” Most were unaware of your whereabouts, only a select few knew. “SHIELD? Fury?”

“Your nephew, actually.”

“Anthony?” Realization dawns on you a second after you say his name. “Fury’s initiative… That’s how, isn’t it? How you’re back and how you met him.”

“Yeah…” Steve takes a second, looking over the room as guilt finds him once again. “I wanted to find you sooner, but…” He can’t get the word out. He meets your eyes, the same ones he fell in love with so long ago, and his face falls. “I was scared of what it’d mean. I know, I know that’s selfish, but I couldn’t face the reality of this.”

“Steve, it’s okay.” As gently as you can, you make your way to him. You place a hand on his cheek, smiling softly up at him. “I’ve waited years to see you again. I could wait until you were ready.”

“I wish we had more time,” He replies, melting into your touch.

“Me too,” You say, breathlessly. “Me too.”
