One of my favorite Grimm tales and you've captured the horror and little Marlene's fear/misplaced guilt/distress perfectly!

Nicely done! The Juniper Tree is one of my favorite fairy tales, and I feel as though the photos in the book don't do it justice. This is super creepy and fits the story perfectly!

This is very good. I have read the fairy tale, and I think this is a very good illustration. I like that you used so little color in your picture, because that makes the blood even more horrible. Good job!

IΒ΄ve never heard this before...
What is it about?
Before I forget: Awesome pic!

'my mother she killed me
my father he ate me
and my dear sister marlinchin
gathered my bones
tied them in a silver hankercheif
and buried me under the
juniper tree'
the legand is if you burry someone under a juniper tree or in the Grimm book 'almond tree' that person who was burried will come back to life without even a single scratch on their body
if you need to know more ask and I will willingly help, for I am an expert on the Grimm fairy tales!

Curryh In reply to MizuWolf [2008-08-03 12:45:49 +0000 UTC]
I recognized, that I know the german version of the story. But there`s nothing said about the juniper tree... Well, maybe I know only a part of it or another poem wich sounds similar. IΒ΄m sad, that I only know the traditional fairytales written by the Grimm Brothers ( you know... like Snow White and all that stuff...). By the way... do you know that the Grimm Brothers took some of their storys from a french author?
π: 0 β©: 1
MizuWolf In reply to Curryh [2008-08-03 23:46:43 +0000 UTC]
ohh really? whom?
oh and the germann version is 'the almond tree' I have the book, but I know of the juniper tree and I looked for a long time in it.. but couldn't find it then stumbled upon 'the almond tree' and it was like the juniper tree but different. ya know what I mean

Curryh In reply to MizuWolf [2008-08-04 22:16:44 +0000 UTC]
Yes. I know, what you mean.
The name of the guy is Charles Perrault. On this page you can read some storys written by him : [link]
but I don`t know if it`s helpful for you, because the storys are in german.

Curryh In reply to MizuWolf [2008-08-08 21:25:41 +0000 UTC]
Oh, that`s too bad. Well, maybe you can find the storys in other languages, if you search in the internet.

I like how ominous it looks... Is this the kind of stuff they look for in concentration portfolios? what's your central theme? I'm just curious because I want to make a portfolio too but I'm kinda lost... T.T:;
π: 0 β©: 1
evanescent-adoration In reply to ParsnipSniffer [2008-04-15 21:41:28 +0000 UTC]
My theme for the portfolio is "fairy tales," and I'm going for the dark side of them :'D Are you making portfolios for an AP art class too? Or is it for sending in for scholarship or something?
π: 0 β©: 1
ParsnipSniffer In reply to evanescent-adoration [2008-04-15 21:56:06 +0000 UTC]
I'm not able to take AP art class (i have band) so I'm putting together a portfolio outside of school and hoping to get some AP credit for it xD;;; probably not going to work, but I'll try anyway. the dark side of fairy tales... that's an interesting theme... and there's definitely a lot of room for creativity there xD Thanks for your help! I feel less scared now because on the info packet all the examples are really weird and abstract... @____@;;;;; but this kind of thing makes more sense. 8) thanks!
π: 0 β©: 1
evanescent-adoration In reply to ParsnipSniffer [2008-04-15 23:37:52 +0000 UTC]
Ah, I see. And you're welcome xD
I don't really know what your info packet says, so I can give you some broad explanation? Maybe? lol
2 portfolios = breadth and concentration, both consisting of 12 pieces each, so 24 pieces in total.
Breadth: Shows variety like in techniques, medias, styles, etc.
Concentration: Have a straight forward central theme of your choice; try to make the theme obvious, but don't make it too broad/narrow either.
I dunno if you've made the slides yet, but if you're gonna make them digitally, I'd recommend [link] Their prices are resonable, and the slides are in good quality too :3
Good luck with the portfolios~!

*O* wow! thanks so much! But ... sorry, i have one more question... xD;;; I've also heard there's a third section to the portfolio called "quality" where they ask for 5 "actual" pieces of art? o_O;;; have you heard of that?
π: 0 β©: 1
evanescent-adoration In reply to ParsnipSniffer [2008-04-16 00:24:36 +0000 UTC]
Nah, I don't mind questions as long as they aren't stupid lol.
Right! I almost forgot about them haha. Quality pieces include 5 best pieces that represent your portfolios. They could all be from your concentration, all from your breadth, or both. These five are the ones you actually send in to get your overall score for the exam, so you have to mat them. They're supposed to flow together and show mark making.
I just realized.. since you're not taking the class, I'm not sure if you're eligible for the exam o__o; Have you asked your art teacher at your school? Cos I remember putting barcode stickers onto the matted pieces, and they're.. well, obviously provided from the school.
π: 0 β©: 1
ParsnipSniffer In reply to evanescent-adoration [2008-04-16 00:36:57 +0000 UTC]
Oh haha. Not eligible... that would be a problem... Well, I read on the site that you can prepare a portfolio individually so I think so, but I'll ask about the barcode stickers and stuff. *O* Thanks for all the info! and thank you very much for taking the time to answer all my questions xD I wish you luck with finishing your portfolio too, but I guess you won't need it xD
π: 0 β©: 1
evanescent-adoration In reply to ParsnipSniffer [2008-04-16 00:56:47 +0000 UTC]
No problem! And one more: I think the size limit for the quality pieces is 18"x25" cos it has to fit in the folder you send in (the folder is provided by the ap art program). I think, but I'm not sure, so you might wanna ask about that too lol xD;;
Thanks cos I need that haha *is a horrible procrastinator* and good luck to you too!
