Description
On the afternoon of August 3, 1973, we're on ATSF's Transcon outside of Needles CA to chase trains. Soon, we caught 2 trains, a Kansas City Bound Manifest Freight led by an SD45, 2 F45's, a GP38, & a GP35, & the World's Fastest Freight Train, the Super C, from Chicago IL to Los Angeles CA. The train was running, again, on time & is keeping to schedule behind 4 SD45-2's which was way too much for the 20 car consist. But that was probably to maintain speed to keep to schedule. The top speed was later increased from 63 mph to 79 mph, but on some occasions, the train hit 90 mph through ABS territory. Despite this train hauling either Electronic Components or Auto Parts, the US Postal Service was their biggest customer. Despite it's successful test runs, very little shippers were interested in paying for the $1,400 Delivery fee. Mainly considering the fact that a standard TOFC load could reach it's destination 15 hours more than the Super C's 40 hour trip. 3 Years later, the Super C made it's last run when the USPS Mail contract was given to Union Pacific & Chicago & North Western for a competing bid of a 50 hour schedule with lower cost. The train would reach LA, the next morning.evangaines 2023
