Description A While later, R1 4-8-4 #3700 "Apollo" speeds past the camera with a Boston to Chicago Passenger Service, which was running over an hour behind schedule & is making up for lost time as it kicks up the snow behind it. The R1's represent the road's response to a dire need for larger, more advanced motive power to help cut travel times and better compete against its larger neighbors. While various designs were drawn up in concert with all three major locomotive builders, a more immediate solution was found after testing the Timken Company’s 4-8-4 Four Aces in 1930. Although meant as a testbed for more comprehensive roller bearing applications, the LE&E found the Four Aces’ performance as a dual service locomotive to be exactly what they were looking for. By the end of the Northern’s tour of LE&E rails, the railroad placed an order for five similar copies as a proof of concept. The 3700 class, delivered in early 1931, proved excellent in speeding LE&E passenger trains over steep grades on the eastern end of the LE&E’s system. When faster schedules precluded older locomotives from high-speed service, the R1s were placed solely in charge of the LE&E’s top passenger trains, and became the face of LE&E advertising in the mid 1930’s before the dawn of the streamlined era. Sadly, of the 5 R1's Built, none survive the scrappers torch.
