Description I am convinced this work is cursed. On every attempt I run in to the strangest problems, all the save files for the previous version have either been lost or have become corrupted. Not to mention the ridiculous number of problems and errors I encountered along the way. Everything from texture files not being recognised, fatal errors while rendering, geometry just plain disappearing and of course Maya crashing without warning.

On the up side I did learn a lot, in particular, command line rendering, polygon reduction, some finer points of lighting with final gather and the exact breaking strain of my keyboard.

This work has become a kind of gauge, having to rebuild it so many times has severed to remind me just how far I’ve come.

Made in Maya
Rendered in Mental Ray
Post in Photoshop

Update: Colour and contrast ajustment.
One of my moniters is dying, everything comes up too bright and slightly wrong colour. I didn't realise this at the time.

wow, i love this. very well rendered, and its a great idea. but it looks like the pices are only on the part of the globe we can see, and shouldnt we see some half, ten tips of pieces on the other side???? just a though.

Wow, this piece is really coming along nicely. I really dig the new piece models that you're using and of course, I love the concept here. The modelling is great and the textures/materials are very well done. Care to disclose the future plans for this piece or are they secret?

Either way, great job.

This work is done for now, I'll proboly have anther crack at it in the future. The peices I may use again, I've always found chess peices to very symbolic.

A very interesting air you added in this version of chess globe. That poisonous green somehow reminds me of the strugle for the world domination, the envy when a general sees that someone else has greater territory, you know what I mean? Nice...and global illumination of course makes it nicer too! Cool

I think this may indeed be the best one yet. I like the the design of the pieces, especialy the king, it makes it look almost tribal.

sevenofeleven [2004-08-23 23:59:25 +0000 UTC]

Well done.
Like the design of the chess pieces.

I don't have enough patience to redo my pictures over and over.
You get so tired and you are looking past the current project to the next one.
One shot and maybe a few tweaks and its done good or bad.
