Oh I love this! Kinda makes me think the crows represent secrets she's been holding and are finally letting out.

I agree to that statement, its always more fun to hear other peoples stories for your work than to hear or make your own.

There's a song(and album) named Blackbird, by Alter Bridge. One of my favourites, so I thought it could be inspired by that. Apparently not.

Hmmm, things just sort of pop into my head mostly. I get really picky about things being just so but I couldn't really say why. I bet if you come up with a story for her it would beat any explanation I could come up with

why are the birds coming out of her mouth, for a start?
one thought that occurred to me was 'prior incantato' (Harry Potter in case you're unfamiliar with it )

so basically a wizard would cast this spell on her to reveal the last spell of hers, which takes the shape of a blackbird.
(usually it would escape from the person's wand rather than their mouth)

her look just kind of seems to imply : 'you can go on as long as you like, but all you'll get out of me is blackbirds. is that the answer you seek?'

that's just one take on it

That totally works as an explanation! I usually think in more metaphorical terms when I'm making the paintings, but some of the most fun stories are the fantasies.
i did just recently actually watch all of the harry potters (finally), but that's for explaining the spell, I wouldn't have known it by name...

how do you mean more metaphorical? all these concepts in fantasy stories are just metaphors, aren't they?
but i think i know what you mean anyway. it's just that rather than having a 'random' or undefined metaphor i tend to link it to a concept from some fantasy/sf story...

I guess what I mean is that I'm never sure if I think what's going on in a painting is actually happening or if it's just a metaphor for something else or if it's all in the character's (or my) head. And I like for the metaphors to be slightly vague because it's just so boring to me when everything is all spelled out. A little mystery keeps you thinking about it, gets your imagination running and starts a dialogue. I like to think that the people who are looking at artwork are usually very imaginative and can put the pieces together in a way that is meaningful to them (like you did). I guess I just don't want to force my own meaning, and anyway my own meanings and thoughts about a piece are sort of a lot of things at the same time-like a dream (or a fantasy) if you get my drift.
As an aside, I did a similar painting a few months ago and it had mockingbirds coming out of a girl's mouth. It was titled "talking and not talking". It's funny how they are similar but feel quite different to me as well. Thanks again for taking the time to look at my paintings.
