Sure, there are basically human perception exploits; most of them are made using different types of contrast, brightness contrast and complementary color matching strong and weak areas paired in opposite series or in opposite directions or often in repetitive schemes; for instance, if you look at the picture above, there are circles of alternate black and white areas and circles using different gray areas; there is a pattern in the order and if you look closely, at certain point that order is reversed. The brain is then forced to choose two possible and contradictory "logical series" of contrasting colors in all directions that observed as a whole, gives the illusion of motion in peripheral vision.
Perhaps looking at them and paying attention to your own brain reactions could give you a better idea than any poor explanation. Just look closely to the details and how they contribute to the whole effect.
