Description
Cactavoirs are desert-based organisms that feed using ambush tactics. These strange beasts have a body that closely resembles a Sponge Cactus, a plant that lives in desert that is well known for its ability to hold large amounts of water. The Sponge Cactus is frequently harvested by locals and wildlife, punching holes in the tough exterior to get to the liquid inside. Cactavoirs root themselves into the ground with their posterior tendrils and retract their appendages so that the cactus body is the only thing seen. When prey gets close, the Cactavoir will throw itself at the victim and use its needles to grab ahold. The eyes will pop open and its spiked tendrils will emerge from pouches in its body. These tendrils will jab into prey and suck them dry of all liquids. Once the victim is drained, a Cactavoir will then slither off to a new place to hunt, making sure to stay away from corpses so that its disguise isn't ruined. The many eyes of a Cactavoir are used to survey its surroundings when upright, so that it can see prey approach. When no prey is nearby, they have the tendrils out to pick away parasites and small animals that try to feed on them.
Though Cactavoirs feed upon animals that feed on Sponge Cactus, there are other organisms that specialize feeding on Cactavoirs. This just goes to show the relentless ecosystem of the desert, where water and fluid is precious.
