"When hearing the stories and tales of Desmodals, it is so easy to picture them as primal beasts and frenzied monsters. A ravenous creature, incapable of thought or reasoning. They are just monsters to haunt our nightmares, and to keep young ones from delving too deep into the tunnels. That is what you think, until you see the one. When first encountering them, you may still see them as vicious predators, as they throw themselves at you and seek to sink their fangs into your flesh. Their disgusting gurgles as they scramble through the darkness, and their angered hisses as they back away from the light of fire. You will still see them as mindless beasts, even after encountering dozens of them, they are just beasts. Then one day, you will see the one. It may be a glance of it, as it scurries away from the light, or you could see it slithering amongst its ravenous brethren. But you will see it. Their look is not always the same but the result is. That one Desmodal that wears the tattered rags of an ancient robe. A single beast clinging to a broken staff it can no longer use. Some may still wear jewelry that has long since rusted and dulled, or you could see one fumbling with a discarded tool, desperate to understand what its mind once easily grasped. When you see one of them, that vicious image of theirs will shatter. That is when you truly remember that they are not simple monsters. Then you will understand the tales of their kind, of great minds broken by the Gods Below. They are not just beasts that dwell in our nightmares. They are reminders of what they once were, and of what we could still become..."
