At first sight, the Fanged Floater looks rather dead in the water, floating belly up, drifting in the current. But the Fanged Floater is very much alive, and is hunting for food. The Fanged Floater is a part of the Floater family, a family of fish that have modified swimming bladders that are much larger then normal fish have. They use this bladder to stay floating in the water, letting currents move them, rather then swimming themselves. The Fanged Floater resides in deeper, darker water, where food is scarce and energy is precious. At first, it looks like it is floating belly up, but rather, the Fanged Floater is right-side up. It has evolved to look upside down, with its large gas bladder protruding from its back like a bulbous belly. Its eyes are also on the underside of its head, adding to the illusion. With this, the Fanged Floater floats through the deep, like a dead fish. Other fish may approach the Floater, believing it to be a dead, easy meal. But with a quick push of its fins, the Floater will surge forward, expand its three-parted upper jaw and snag the curious fish. Its special jaws can open wide, and its teeth are so long, they stick up between the upper jaws. Fish too large for it to swallow are still food to it, stretching its mouth wide to sink its teeth into the side and tear off a mouthful of meat. Fanged Floaters also have lures on the top of their heads to attract smaller fish.
