Description The ignorance towards the existence of certain Mancers cannot always be blamed by common folk education. There are some cases where a person will actually misidentify a Mancer, and believe it is something else entirely. This has been seen with Geomancers, being mistaken for ancient statues. This can also be seen in Hydromancers, masters of water, who are commonly mistaken for aquatic life and other marine monsters.

Hydromancers start off with water-based spells and an obsession for all things wet. They will move to coastal or lake side towns and set up shop at the docks. Some Hydromancers will work as dock hands, using water spells to guide in large ships and slow them to port. Some will use their power to separate the salt from salt water, and provide fresh water for crews and village folk. The more advanced will be hired onto large barges and cargo ships, where they will help steer the boat and calm stormy seas. But boats and docks are not what they care about, they want to be in the water. Hydromancers start off as excellent swimmers, but soon learn the skills to help them create an air bubble in the water, where they can rocket through the water with plenty of air. When not working, many Hydromancers use this power to stay underwater, and meditate with the fish and coral. But as they get deeper and deeper into their studies, Hydromancers will yearn to be one with the water. At that point, they will unlock the power to alter the water in their bodies. With the human body being mostly water, they can actually alter their shape and composition, and transform their body into some new form. Hydromancers will alter their shape to take on the likeness of their favorite marine organism. Some twist their form into that of a fish, while some may jam their body into a large shell and remain in there. At that point, a Hydromancer will willingly live the life of an animal, using their powers to hunt and survive. They can breathe underwater and can feed on any organism for sustenance. Their water controlling powers allow them to move swiftly through the ocean, and create limbs for them to work with. These same water limbs allow them to exit the water and walk on land, though they still remain in an animal-like state.

Sailors speak of ancient Hydromancers who fled to the dark depths of the ocean, entering a place so deep, that light doesn't even shine there. They say these Hydromancers have altered their forms into terrifying monstrosities, and occasional rise from the abyss to lay waste to fleets and towns. But these are simply tales, and should not be taken as facts.

This could get really Lovecraftian, really easily. Oh, by the way did you read Mountains of Madness? (I think it was you who said you planned to...)

Yes I did! And I must say I was blown away by it. It is one of my favorite Lovecraft pieces now, next to Color out of Space and The Dunwich Horror. You were definitely right on the detail Lovecraft put into that story. He almost dedicated an entire chapter to describing the buried Elder Things and it also finally gave a description to what Cyclopian structures look like.

Like the design idea of these guys. Could totally mistake them for an unusual sea creature.
