Description
This piece was done for December challenge where we had to make a piece in the style of a favorite and still living artist who inspires or influences us. I went with Dave Rapoza and his Starveil style. Starveil is a creator-owned graphic novel he is designing and when I saw the artwork I was immediately drawn to it due to its classic sci-fi influences in tone and color. Jean Moebius Giraud comes to mind. So for the December challenge I decided to try my hand at the style and at the same time do a fan-art piece of one of Starveil's characters, called Cyborg, who reminds me a tad-bit of Wren from Phantasy Star. What inspires me of Dave Rapoza is his rendering style, iconic characters and themes in his art. His pieces are eyeball grabbing and stunning and there is a certain way he details his creations that are undeniably his. For this piece in particular I tried to stay as close as possible to his style by the use of line, texture, tone, color and shape. For the typeface, I was unable to find the one he uses, but since it has a certain Art Deco look to it due to the letter form, I decided to find a suitable and close approximation to the typeface, duplicate and emulate the effect he has on his own pieces. Here are the links to his deviant page and the character:
