Let's start the year with the skeleton of an awesome species: the lesser mole-rat (Spalax leucodon, or Nannospalax leucodon). The species occurs in southeastern Europe.

Lesser mole-rats have no tail (the tail bones stay 'inside' the bum) and their small eyes are covered by a layer of skin, making them completely blind. Unlike most fossorial mammals, they don't dig with their front feet. Rather, they burrow through the soil using a powerful set of teeth. How cool is that?
