Description
"It's strange to think how badly we treated the sea for so long. Being out here makes me glad we came to our senses." --MargraveAs larger portions of the Earth were designated as nature reserves in the mid-to-late 3rd millennium, the role of the UN's environmental protection commissions was expanded. They became responsible for the protection and maintenance of almost 90% of the Earth's surface, necessitating a dramatic increase in resources and assets.
The Oceans Protection Commission deployed a mid-size fleet of endurance cruisers to conduct perpetual maritime patrols. These vessels were designed to accommodate both scientific research and ranger duties, with a minimal environmental impact.
The Stevenson-class of 18 ships was launched in the 28th century. Their improvements over the earlier Attenborough-class were primarily related to modernisation of internal systems, as the overall design was considered completely adequate for their low-intensity duties. Like most previous OPC cruisers, they were armed only for deterrence of illegal exploiters and polluters, and were otherwise considered to be research and conservation platforms.
