BB is short for Beyond Birthday. He was born with the eyes of a shinigami
And he was suppose to be the 2nd L (the name Wammy gave him was B or Back-up, because A couldn't take the pressure of become the next L)
But I guess something happened that made him want to challenge L and beat him. So he became and insane serial killer. (you should read Los Angles BB Murder Case to learn more about Beyond birthday.
and like all Wammy kids he has some weird obsession, his is Jam. Strawberry Jam. and most people draw him covered with Jam or Blood so you won't get him confused with L
