Chapter 1: Empty Streets
She woke up in the middle of 34th Street with a headache. Groaning slightly, she got to her feet and tried to figure out what happened. There was a car, and then... she was pretty sure it hit her. But then why wouldn't she be in the hospital?
"Hello~!"
Before she could think about what happened for too long, a cheerful voice called out from... above her? She looked up, and almost fell back down from what she saw.
Staring her in the face was what looked like a teenage girl hovering over her.
She staggered backwards a bit, and the floating girl righted herself and backed up a bit.
"Maybe I should have been a bit more subtle..." mumbled the hovering girl. She brightened up quickly, and smiled widely. "Anyways, welcome to the Underground! I'm Miyu," she said, holding her hand out.
The other girl just stared for a while. The girl currently floating in the air had tan skin, silver-white hair, and... were those wings coming out of her back?
"Sorry I scared you a little while ago. I guess I can't expect you to be to friendly after that." Miyu retracted her hand, then rummaged around in a bag she had on her shoulders. "Anyway, I came to give you this!" She said, producing a small object.
The girl took it hesitantly, and looked at it more closely. It looked like a pin, and it had a picture of a skull on it.
"You already have one of those on you right now," Miyu continued. "Anyway, I have to go talk to someone else right now, so I hope I see you around! Good luck!"
And with that, Miyu flew off, leaving the girl even more confused and bewildered, and absolutely sure that this was not happening.
Maybe she actually was in the hospital. Maybe this was all a dream caused by too much pain medicine, and she'd wake up in a hospital bed with her family in the room. Maybe...
Her phone buzzed, snapping her out of her thoughts. She took it out, revealing a single notification on the lock screen:
Go to the front of Mizuhime Center.
Form a pact.
You have 120 minutes.
Fail, and face erasure.
- The Reapers
A sharp pain on her right palm startled her. She looked down, seeing a crimson display that definitely wasn't blood. 2:00:00, it read. The girl watched it.
1:59:59.
1:59:58.
She began to run. She wasn't sure what "erasure" was, but she certainly didn't want to find out. She set off in the direction of Mizuhime Center.
She was almost there when she heard something loud roar from a side street. Turning down a side street, she saw what looked like some kind of bird diving toward a person in a defensive stance. There was another girl with wings flying near them, almost as if taunting the person. Despite her better judgement, she turned the corner to help them. As she got closer she could hear a bit more of what was being said.
"You're lucky you have that weird bird! If you didn't, I bet I could beat you!"
"Wanna test that theory?"
"The bird's still there, so..."
The winged girl opened her mouth to respond, but spotted the girl out of the corner of her eye. "Looks like we've got company."
The girl slowly started to back out onto the main road, but the bird swooped in and stopped her. The flying girl laughed. "Just where do you think you're going?"
"Do you ever say something that's not a stock phrase?"
"Shut up!" The winged girl's eyes flashed with anger. Then she grinned. "My name's Akane. Remember that; it's the name of the person who's gonna ruin your life."
Akane flew off, taking the bird with her. The girl turned around and started back toward the main street.
"Hey!"
The girl stopped in her tracks and turned around. The person Akane was messing with was still there. "They said we should form a pact, so we should probably do that now, right?"
"Yeah, we should."
She shook his hand - she could see clearly now that he was a boy.
The boy smiled. "I'm Hinata. What's your name?"
"Nice to meet you," she started. "My name's ..." she trailed off.
"Eh? What's wrong?"
"I... I can't remember my name."
