Description THIS IS A PRACTICE ON GRADIENT TECHNIQUES. I DID NOT CREATE IRON MAN ETC ETC ETC.

And yes, this is a vector of one of the promo posters for the Iron Man movie. I obviously did not draw this up myself. Credit for the photo goes to Marvel Comics and co.

uh... if by trace you mean i used an original iron man poster as a base...

You traced over the original and colored it.

I dunno, doesn't seem like something to be proud about.

"I hope you're better than this guy."

One, I don't vector anymore.

Two, I don't trace my work. I would help I'm better than THAT.

Man, you guys are whiners.

Nice gallery MagicalMelonBall but you should always praise those who are in practice to become better... feel me? Cause we all "pull" from each other in various techniques.

... i don't really know what you're getting at. i didn't "trace" then "color" over anything. yeah, i didn't do anything fancy to jazz it up and i didn't create or sketch out the original concept of ironman, but that vector is a combination of a bajillion shapes and gradients that took me weeks to finish.

I put a lay over of the post to your image and it lines up perfectly. PERFECTLY. PERFECTLY

NO ONE, and I repeat, NO ONE can possibly EYEBALL a piece and have it match up line for line, detail for detail to the original.

I didn't accuse you of stealing the vector. I believe you did it.

But you traced over the original. It's just as bad as painting over a photo.

expoised In reply to Immamoonkin [2010-05-24 22:26:35 +0000 UTC]

but isn't that sort of what vectors are? other than some creative flourishes and nuances, if a vector isn't an illustration, it's basically a digital version of a photo or something else... i never called this an illustration.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Immamoonkin In reply to expoised [2010-05-24 22:54:59 +0000 UTC]

Of course vectors are for illustration. This is an illustration even if you didn't call it.
And no, vectors are not traced pieces of work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

expoised In reply to Immamoonkin [2010-05-24 23:01:21 +0000 UTC]

i never said a vector was traced pieces of work or that vectors were not illustrations.

vectoring is a TECHNIQUE which can be utilized to create original illustrations or for recreating an existing photo into digital form.

call what i'm doing a traced photograph if you want, but it's still a vector in terms of technique used.

same thing i said to the other guy:

honestly, this was more of a practice with technique. i didn't claim it to be creative. now that i have sort of mastered the technique, i AM starting to work on more creative concept pieces and sketching out my own stuff. i'm not going to remove it, but i will put a remark in my comments that this is purely for technique practice and nothing else. and if deviantart doesn't find that acceptable, they can remove it or ban me or whatever. i've been planning to get a new username anyways, this one is outdated by years.

MolsIllustration In reply to expoised [2010-05-24 22:34:15 +0000 UTC]

You make vector artists like me look BAD. I never traced anything. To say something like that really brings down the artists that use vectoring and vexelling legitly. You know, those that use stock art or their own photos or stuff with permission

TheOn3LeftBehind In reply to MolsIllustration [2010-07-02 20:56:41 +0000 UTC]

Uhm. People use "bases" all the time to do vectors. Every single damn tutorial I've seen involves GOING OVER the image with selections and creating layers. expoised is right, it *is* basically a trace.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MolsIllustration In reply to TheOn3LeftBehind [2010-07-03 00:47:00 +0000 UTC]

That's all well and good, as long as you're not TRACING AN IMAGE THAT YOU DON'T HAVE A RIGHT TO USE. You missed the whole point of my argument, which is almost over a month old so why you're suddenly butting in is beyond my comprehension.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheOn3LeftBehind In reply to MolsIllustration [2010-07-03 06:30:55 +0000 UTC]

Wow, bitch alert. I have a fucking right to butt in whenever I want. The situation still happened, didn't it? You still think the same thing, don't you? So, therefore I can "butt in" (which isn't actually butting in since it's public; if you didn't want anyone butting in you would've sent a note) whenever the fuck I want.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MolsIllustration In reply to TheOn3LeftBehind [2010-07-03 18:23:31 +0000 UTC]

I'm the one being bitchy yet you're the one cursing at me and calling me names. I find this amusing and ironic.
Yeah it's a public forum, but the argument was resolved a month ago so your opinion doesn't matter any more.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheOn3LeftBehind In reply to MolsIllustration [2010-07-03 19:48:00 +0000 UTC]

Sure it does. Cursing and calling you names is a reaction. You're a bitch first and I'll be a fucking bitch back. I actually stick up for myself. I'm sorry, "resolved"? Was this a Q&A? Don't think so. My opinion still counts as it's still important to the actual artist, not you.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MolsIllustration In reply to TheOn3LeftBehind [2010-07-03 19:56:48 +0000 UTC]

I am greatly amused.
No, your opinion DOESN'T matter because I think you missed the point: What this artist is doing is stealing and ripping off another person's creativity. Trace stuff you have the right to trace like stock. (Or you know, get permission?)
There's no point in being on an art site if you're going to rip off another artist (or artists). I don't appreciate people who defend this kind of action.

I suppose asspats would be appreciated by the OP.

expoised In reply to MolsIllustration [2010-05-24 22:40:55 +0000 UTC]

but you're still "tracing" over the stock art and photo, no? i've vectored stock art (with permission) before and i've done my own photos before too, so don't say i'm not "legit." so what do you do when you want to create a vector creation of something commercial like a famous actor or movie poster, etc? i never said the base was original. in my portfolio, i disclaim any rights i have to the original concept and design of "iron man"... anyone who looks at this knows i didn't create ironman.

MolsIllustration In reply to expoised [2010-05-24 22:41:41 +0000 UTC]

expoised In reply to MolsIllustration [2010-05-24 22:54:42 +0000 UTC]

you could always explain what you mean instead of acting like a douchebag, but i guess douches have to douche.

Anyways, I wanted a vectored Iron Man wallpaper and decided to vector this photo: [link]

I'm not using this vector commercially and I'm not claiming the original as my own. The vector is not a fake vector. I'm so sorry I didn't call up Marvel to ask if I could use their image, but I'm pretty sure they would be okay with me vectoring the image as it's for personal use.

I'm not saying all vector/vexel artists "trace" over existing photos. There are very many talented illustrators who create their own sketch and vector over that. I do that too, but this particular vector is of something already commercially produced. My bad if that was a huge no-no in the vector world. I didn't know that as A LOT OF OTHER VECTOR ARTISTS do the same thing with pictures of Johnny Depp or Angelina Jolie or whatever.

Either way, this doesn't make the vector technique anything less than what it is.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MolsIllustration In reply to expoised [2010-05-24 23:00:22 +0000 UTC]

You're the one being a douche by stealing art :\
Get over it. You make vectorists and vexellists look bad when you trace and copy over art that's not yours and you had no permission to use.
Stealing art is a big no-no in any world of art.

Just because other people do it too doesn't make it right. What are you, a third grader? "Johnny shot Mary and lots of other people kill each other so it's okay!" Murder is different from art theft but the principle is the SAME.

No.

You didn't do anything spectacular anyway. Yeah it's good vectoring but there's nothing original to it. I saw it and went 'gosh that looks exactly like the promo art from the movies.' I didn't think 'wow that's beautiful work I've never seen anything like it.' But I guess that's what you wanted in the end: to come off as an unoriginal vectorist.

There is a world of free art stock out there for you to manipulate however the heck you want. Embrace it.

Great artists are original. Art thieves never get far in this world.

If you want a new username you can just deactivate your account. If you get yourself banned and make a new account it's considered ban evasion and you'll just get banned again.
