"I have a PMD2 headcanon with 2 Exploration teams. Story missions alternates, but the expedition requires both. So I improvised a 2nd boss with Dewott's pirate past from PokePark; he stumbled upon the lake, couldn't leave, helps protect it."- the original UnovaForSmash post
We're nearing the end of the Month of Love pics.
Generally these pairs are based on Pokemon's fifth gen medias, but here it's a twist applied to a gen 4 one in headcanon.
Uxie is the guardian of the Time Gear of Fogbound Lake, the first Time Gear location that the protag's team visits in the Explorers series of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games.
In most versions of PokePark 2, Dewott is basically characterized as a ronin, which is a samurai with nothing to protect, and thus who is wandering the world, looking for a purpose, in his case mastering his Water-type moves. Between having nothing to settle for before and the French localization of the same game making him a pirate looking for a competent crewmate instead, I headcanon elements of both, being a master type, formal and samurai-like character, but with the freedom of going where he wants like any sea explorer.
This does lead to an interesting scenario, where I need a second boss to make up for why one of my two protagonistic exploration teams don't make it up Fogbound Lake at the same time, as one of them obviously met with Uxie's illusion of Groudon guarding the lake.
What I couldn't quite elaborate in the post is that, in his travels as assumed from his character archetype, Dewott could've stumbled upon any of the other "Pokemon civilization only" worlds prior to PokePark 2, which includes not just the original PokePark but also the many continents of the PMD series.
In this headcanon, he's a minor character that fought his way up to the lake and even defeated the fake Groudon way before the Guild Expedition happened. Having little purpose of his own and being unable to leave the lake of his own accord without Uxie modifying his memories so that he's never seen it (which is a risk he doesn't want to take to avoid losing the fighting experience gained from the dungeon and Groudon), he agrees to help defend it, doubly so after hearing from Uxie about how important of an artifact the Time Gear is.
Having a type disadvantage doesn't make him much of a threat to Grovyle, though, and only Azelf, who heard from both Uxie and Mesprit that a thief is looking for the Time Gears, had a backup plan to protect its own lake, so nothing really changes in the story despite his presence. Still, I like the idea of a fight between him and Grovyle, makes the first major Time Gear loss slightly more epic rather than just done in a single foreshadowy scene.

(This is the only regular "Month of Love" pic to not use either the heart screen effect or the Rising Hearts effect; I figured both characters were too stoic for that)
