"Writing is not plumbing. It's never "broken" it's just not the best you can possibly do. In fact, you do better if you try and improve on your stuff. A great teacher of writing once told me she came down hard on all of her students because the second you become happy with the way your writing is and think you could never get better, you won't. You stagnate, you lose interest because there's no point, you're not challenging yourself to do better.
