Description I believe I have shown these before - which is why this is going in Scraps. But as I try to slowly refine some things (ears) and mentally prepare for my first time camping in like 12 years I thought it would be nice to show the little character intro/profile for Vesk I made for the unofficial discord. Its mostly the same as his Farseers Tails background he was just never picked up from when he was thrown off the ship. Instead he washed up in the Dragon Isles and quickly ran to the closest 'chief-boss' characters he could find to try and be safe.

Found in the remains of a fishing hamlet in Estalia

A strange artifact to find after the remains of a raid. Broken homes, shattered lives, and blood sure. But a paper page? That stuck out to those who came upon the scene. But it was some time before someone finally took the time to pick it up. The fires were first. Thankfully the seawater made that simple. And as the search for survivors began the paper was picked up. Given a shake to remove the dirt before it was scanned over.

'Fleetmaster Ironscratch, I trust your raids and acquisitions have been successful.

As requested I have compiled a report for you to review about your, of course, fantastic idea of including dedicated herb and bandage rats in the crews.'

Despite coming from the rat-men the writing was...very skillfully done. In the Araby script?

'The four slaves together have proven eager to get stuck in with the wounded before the Hunger takes them. Of course dozens still fall and feed the crew but I have noted and seen the results of more seats being filled and more loot able to be loaded back compared to last season. And with extra paws compared to the normal churn we are still above board with crew numbers and so can continue to sail and raid unimpeded compared to, as mentioned, the previous season. Your scheme was of course correct in all ways but seeing your genius first hand has been impressive experience. The crew themselves have even seemed to enjoy having the weak ones around. For shoving around and for the potential to live longer and rise even higher above the slaves.'

A streak of red dried blood obscured the next section of words before it became legible again.

'..wever one of the Slaves, Veskatt, betrayed the crew by stabbing my first mate in the spine while attempting to heal him. Before I could - the failure. And has such has been delivered to the sea. I suggest extra whipping and beating to ensure compliance. Or executing the worst performer in front of the others.

- Clawcaptain Grot'

A fairly non-descript rat from the Slave breeding pits of Spineport Veskatt was actually given a choice in his career path from the Stormvermarines when he was big enough to hold an oar. The Fleetmaster had some new scheme-plans that needed to be trialed so Vesk was asked what he would prefer to do. Rotate that oar until he died. Or learn how to splint and bandage wounds. Vesk was surprised how few of his fellow runts actually picked the medical path.

That was until he actually got into his education. Elbow deep in Moulder cast offs as he was shouted at and whipped over the back to find the organ-parts, wrap the gash-cut, and drag the lunch-corpse! It was lighter than the oar. And so he worked hard to please his Master-betters and proved himself to be eager if nothing else. After all this path would let him live a little longer right? And saving the lives of his /loving/ and /respectful/ clan and crew rats above him would be good right?

It was this mantra of 'be useful, or die-die' that pushed the slave to throw himself into the education and emerge out the other side a dedicated herb-rat of Skurvy. A speedbump in the normal churn and burn of the boats as they raided and sailed about. Letting voyages last just a little longer and have to spend fewer tokens restocking the crew when they did return. The plan seemed to be a successful one! And while respect and love were words not really in Queekish the lives he did manage to save did mean less kicks and stomps from the crew rats above him.

He even had a uniform of his own! Sure it came off a dead crewrat but hey - he wasn't going to miss it. Same as the Bretonnian priest who donated his satchel, and tasty eyes, to the herb-rat. But nothing good lasts with Skaven and the First Mate died under his care. Weather he stuck in the long dagger or not was irrelevant to the Captain. And Skurvy has a love for the theatric. So off the plank Vesk went. Splashing and surfacing in a strange new land.

Be useful, or die-die.
