Description
The motivation was to draw the “uniform” of a couple subcultures that emerged after the death of grunge (Cobain’s suicide in Spring 1994 took the whole genre with it).
Britpop frontmen Brett Anderson (Suede) and Jarvis Cocker (Pulp) basically had a slightly longer version of White’s standard haircut in the ‘90s so I had to give him Oasis’.
Britpop wasn’t that big in the US. Blur and Pulp and Oasis had hits (Suede did not), but it wasn’t a whole identity here like it was in the UK. There wasn’t a fashion (essentially sloppy “casual” “hard mod,” all British Heritage brand). So, the idea of some American guy just “going Britpop” is ace poseurism. Like spelling "humour" with a u.
Getting aggressive defending twee pop (“indie bubblegum rock”) is amusing to me since all sweet and cuddly. “Indie Rock” meant something kinda different in the ‘90s than it does now, but that’s the core of what I mean. It’s “the alternative to Alternative.” “The Soft Rock of Punk.” It’s punk for nerds who can’t
Billy is still loyal to the Wu (GZA’s Liquid Swords came out the previous year) but given that he’s the perfect overlap of:
a.) in his early 20s
b.) bookish and
c.) overly romantic/sentimental but doesn't know any actual girls,
...the first Belle & Sebastian record is gonna hit him like a ton of bricks.
He’s less likely to get beaten up at a Tullycraft show than a Body Count concert.
(He’ll get over it fast, he’s way too angry to stay twee.)
