Genoese traders in Crimea wanted to solidify their control of Crimea and expand their influence over the Black Sea trade. Genoese Merchants started propagating Catholicism, Italian culture and customs. Ligurians and other Italians also began settling the peninsula. The Genoese Doge sold all his properties on the Black Sea apart from Crimea, so he could invest in the "Italian Pearl of the Orient". As time passed, settlers started mixing with Greeks and Crimean Tatars, and the name "Crimea" started fading into history and was replaced with "Cassaria", which was the name of the Genoese colony in the south of the peninsula, and also the Italian name for Khazaria. The colony was granted independence in the 19th Century, during the Revolutions of 1848. Today, Cassaria is a highly developed country with an economy based mostly on tourism. It has very good relations with Greece, Italy and Russia, due to the many centuries of their influence on the country.
