Description
They were not human. They were not animal. They were something else.
They had found the TV in an abandoned house, along with a generator and some gasoline. They had dragged it to their shelter, a hole in the ground covered with metal sheets and plastic bags. They had hooked it up to the generator and turned it on.
They had seen images of another world. A world that had existed before the war. A world that was green and blue and bright. A world that was full of life and beauty and wonder.
They had seen people like them, but not like them. People who had two arms and two legs and one head. People who had hair and skin and eyes. People who wore clothes and shoes and hats. People who spoke and laughed and sang.
They had seen things they did not understand. Things that made them curious and afraid and angry. Things like cars and planes and boats. Things like books and music and art. Things like love and joy and peace.
They had watched the TV for hours, for days, for weeks. They had watched it until they forgot where they were, who they were, what they were. They had watched it until they became addicted to it, obsessed with it, possessed by it.
They had watched it until the gasoline ran out and the generator stopped working.
Then they watched the static.
