"Hey, do you want to be my lover?" Said a lonely boy, four or five.
My first thought was who is this kid?
My second was where did this kid learn this word.
I squatted down next to him so I could talk to him eye to eye.
“What kind of lover do you mean?"
Surely this kid didn't mean what society's definition of the word was. He sort of look confused but then looked for a deeper definition in himself.
"Will you..." He paused unsure of himself or of the words he was trying to describe.
"Would you hold my hand if I were feeling selfish and wanted all of your attention to myself? Would you make me forget a bad dream even if I woke you up from a good one? If I were to fall and scrape my knee, would you kiss away the tears and pain? If I were in a bad mood and said mean things to you, would you still want to be near me at the end of the day?"
He paused for a moment, wanting to add something else but not sure if it was the right thing to say.
"If... If I were to die, you would be sad for a little while but in the end you would be less sad, right? If you were my lover, you wouldn't leave me alone and go away just because you couldn't handle me, right?"
He looked like he was going to cry. He wanted to express his feelings more but he didn't have the vocabulary to explain it. I just took his little trembling hands in mine and tilted his head so he would look at me.
"Sweetheart, you’re using the wrong word. Not lover, mother."
I pause to see what his reaction would be and chuckle a bit to see his little cheeks turn pink as he realize his mistake.
“And if you’re still up to it, I would love to be your mother."
His smile shined brightly as I adopted him.
That's how I meet my son, my baby boy.
I know it's a selfish and idiotic thing to say, but sometime I'm so grateful that his mother left him because now I get to know him.
