I don't think I will ever enjoy this Comic the way others can. I do not agree nor can I accept the idea that Starswirl the Bearded and Discord are the same. I also still believe Celestia schoolgirl love for Discord is out of character, for her to pine over him and feel need for his presence.
I do apologize, as it is a well made comic, and I wish I could offer more to you FallenInTheDark but I cannot.

there's no love between celestia and starswirl, for now is just respect and admiration.
still this is all my headcanon so many, probably, wouldn't like it, at least the way i'm putting it down.

Hmm, there seems to be a little misunderstanding, the love that irks me is between Discord and Celestia, where she is shown pining for this spirit of chaos.... though since Discord is Starswirl in this comic as well. Yet base on what has been shown I would say Celestia only saw Starswirl as her teacher.

what i meant is: so far they respect each other one being the teacher and the other the pupil.
in next parts there's going to be some more characters development, building up their emotions, or at least i will try.

i don't have much to explain, there's not really a method.
i just make a lot of sketches then i try to put them all in a page and into panels, once that's done (after few trials and error and new ideas) i make the lines in MS5 and then color with ps cs6.
the only problem comes with the size i decided to use, really long and thin, it gets out of standardized dimensions, the flow of the panels is different too and in the end it's practically like joining three regular pages into one XD

Ummm, I am more than sure that while against Discord, both royal sisters had 6 stones circling around them before they used elements against him.
Against Nightmare Moon, Celestia also had 6 stones circling around her before she used the elements against him.
Against Sombra in flashback, we do not see any levitating stones, isntead we see how both sisters combined their horns and shot Sombra with beam of magic ( and Twilight with her friends didn't took elements to Crystal Empire ), so I am more than sure that elements were not used and would not work on him.

i guess that was all before the actual appearance of the "original" element's forms, since they didn't want to spoil that part of the story i think it was decided to be kept in the shadows, literally
i'm just going on my own ideas here ^^

Wait, didn't decoration on a castle window show Celestia and Luna use elements against Discord, while Sombra episode came up later and in flashback we do not see any stones. I am sure it was intentional ( and if you add the fact that it was Cadence and crystal heart that finished Sombra while mane 6 didn't took the elements, there had to be a reason why elements would not work on him ).
Anyway good luck with your ideas.

in "return of harmony" celestia says they used the elements to stop discord (and we see that in details in "princess twilight sparkle") and the glass window show just celestia's and luna's horn "glowing" without any of the elements represented near them.
also there is no window showing the first defeat of sombra, so i'm going with (as i said) that the element weren't supposed to be shown in their original forms until "princess twilight sparkle" and same would go for the crystal heart all wouldn't be shown for the episode's sake.

Well. I still prefer to believe that Celestia and Luna beat Sombra with pure force as it is best explanation why mane 6 didn't took the elements. Or else it would be a big plot hole why Twilight and her friends risk their lives trying to save entire empire without using the only means that made them national heroes in the first place (why send the only ponies that can use elements to defeat strongest foes to risk their lives when they do not even take the elements with them. Any group of ponies could accomplish the same what mane 6 could, and at least the only ponies that can stop Discord and use elements would not be in danger).
But I quess it is all up to everyone's individual head-cannon unless the show itself state that Sombra was not beaten by elements, so go for it.

one thing i don't understand is that if luna and celestia each controlled 3 crystals then how was Celestia able to use all 6 against NMM if she only had power over three of them?

I think she could not, and that's why it failed.
All we know is that elements represent: Loyality, Magic, Laughter, Honestly, Kindness and Generousity.
Base on crystal/elements color, Celestia was: Magic, Kindness and Generousity (those were strong in her).
When Celestia tried to use all 6 elements, her loyality, honestly and laughter was put to the test (Celestia may have been generous, kind and posses powerful magic, but she was probably not all that loyal, while big sense of duty left her with not much desire to have fun, laugh and spread laughter around, Celestia was most likely a firm serious ruler, not a party pony like Luna, and finally, Celestia seems to be quite cunning in teaching others, so honestly was not her strong point (Celestia is not honest for sure).
She somehow managed to use all 6 elements, but because her laughter, honestly and loyality was her weakpoint, the elements didn't heal Luna but instead banished her to the moon, and by using all elements by herself while striking her sister (sisterly bond broken), the elements rejected her and turned into worthless stones.
Long story short. Celestia could not use all 6 elements, as result, the elements failed to heal Luna and turned into stones. If Twilight would try to use elements of her friends, it would probably also backfire.
