"Not a king but a dictator" doesn't really make any sense to me. They're, for all intents and purposes, one and the same. There's just this stigma that dictatorship is inherently evil.
The only real difference is rulership is not passed down from parent to child.
"Tyrant" may be what you were meaning to say.

a king is legitimate the ruler of the land (someone that inherited the power from predecessors or got to power thanks to his great deeds) a dictator is one that obtained his power with use of brute force.
also i looked for the precise meanings:
dictator: absolute ruler
tyrant: person who dictates/oppresses

No king was ever named "thanks to his great deeds". Every king was named due to being part of the "royal family", someone connected through bloodline to the predecessor. It just so happens that the vast majority of the "great deeds" were done by members of the royal family because they were the only ones ever trained or educated to be able to.
As you said, a dictator is merely someone, elected or not, who has absolute power, much like a king. A dictator can be perfectly legitimate (like I said, there's this stigma — that you seem under the effect of, judging by your wording — that dictatorship is inherently evil). I'm not sure what you mean by "one that obtained his power with use of brute force". If you mean through cheating (i.e. manipulation of election polls) and assassinations, that's just politics and tyranny.
A king is merely a subcategory of a dictatorship.
And, in fact, your descriptions of both are not mutually exclusive.
As overused as the term tyrant may appear, the reason it's overused it's that it's correct.

you see with king i go straight with king arthur, the image of a hero beloved by it's people.
when i think of dictators i think of hitler, stalin, mao zedong, kim jon il, mussolini (even after the decision to recover swamp areas of italy to increase wheat production) , francisco franco (even if his iron fist kept spain as a single nation instead of huge separation of micro states), nicolae ceausescu, saddam hussein, batista, castro (even if he brought universal heath and education to cuba).
and these are just the one that comes to mind. most of dictators are/were "bad" news.
still i can't really make a straight definition of bad and good, it's all a matter of perspective and on which receiving end you are…
with "brute force" btw i mean violence.
again there could be "good" dictators but i have no knowledge of them, statistically not all dictators must be "evil" there must be at least one that with his absolute power brought a nation towards democracy, but then again i have no information.
to draw the line, i guess tyrant is a better definition for a "fallen king", so i'll be changing that ^^

............why does everyone not take into accout one detail?
thedy could not even use the elements at that point. from the comics we learn they were suffering a falling out before sombra came along. and even in the anime we are given visual indication that they probably fought and defeated him directly. no elements involved.
besides, as powerful as sombra is, he is no discord. you really think the elements would have left sombra with anything of his powers if hit by their might?

that is a thing i have with the comics, they fall in my category of "semi canon", since many things are out of the order (considering the show itself as the real canon)
also i'm not trying to follow the show 100% i try to be close but not fully.
in this comic i made them use the elements (being necessary for my story aside) since nightmare moon, sombra and discord were freed after roughly the same time (1000 years or so), so i'm going with the idea that the elements can hold an entity for a fixed amount of time.
and on another thing i think sombra is fairly strong at least as much as nightmare moon, he is tricky he using mind games and traps, nightmare moon just blasted celestia away XD
then again this is how i view him.
also did i made his horn flash with any magic when he said he'll take everything with him? nope ^^
it's all part of the story that is going to come up
once again don't consider this story as completely canonical, i try to be close but not 100%
