She'd never intended for it to end this way. Granted, few things ever end exactly as intended, but this was a blunder not even Muriel had accounted for. When she'd volunteered to accompany the small Tonpelli blues expedition into tech-touched territory she was already given a few..uncertain looks. She insisted the team would need medical assistance on such an expedition, to which there was no counterargument. It was true enough that recent expeditions had returned from the no-mans-land with casualties, and it was almost guaranteed this expedition would prove no exception. A medic on the team might turn the tide and allow them to bring more of their soldiers back from that hell. In truth, though, Muriel had only volunteered because she was growing desperate. Over two months with no word from either of her parents was beginning to weigh heavy on her, and it seemed everyone else around her had answers. Everyone except her.

Packing only the essential supplies into her backpack and carrying with her her so-called medic's bag (a collection of surgical items, tools, and solutions for injection should she need it), she set off with the small group of burly curios (and barely keeping up with her smaller stride) to head into tech-touched territory. A few days passed with no incident, though she could recall a handful of harrowing moments in which they had to dispatch small groups of tech-touched (where Muriel stepped back and allowed the soldiers to do their work) or avoid detection from larger ones. No real incidents occurred, yet there was no sign of her parents either, not in any of the tech-touched parties nor any sign of them otherwise (though she wasn't quite sure what she was expecting on that front).

On the front lines, things often change in an instant. This was a fact all soldiers knew, but Muriel? Muriel was certainly no soldier. It should come as no surprise to learn that when the team were suddenly descended upon by a group of tech-touched while wandering the unrecognisable outskirts of Hanto Magnata the unsuspecting Muriel was seen as easy prey in the chaos. While the others beat back the brunt of the corrupted drones, she was defenceless, and as such one particularly menacing drone approached her she seemed to change in an instant. One moment she was staring in horror at what she knew was her approaching doom, the next she was stood over its lifeless body, horrified for an entirely different reason. She kept her eyes fixed on some distant point while the fighting subsided behind her, but she could not focus on anything but the feeling of the spear she'd picked up penetrating the drone's soft flesh, passing past bone and piercing organs. It reminded her of the surgeon's work she'd known so well. She felt sick.

She snapped back to reality to realise the Blues had won only when they had to pry her fingers from the spear, guiding her away from the drone to distract her by asking her to tend to some minor wounds sustained in the conflict. She spoke little the rest of the trip and carried out her duty to completion in near silence. It seemed having a medic on the team made some difference after all.

Oh, Muriel...what have you gotten yourself into now? This is Muriel's first cyborg kill! I'm not sure she's quirt cut out for it, but maybe she can be convinced she did the right thing. She still sees the drones as salvageable people so she's not thrilled with the prospect of being a murderer. She may need some comforting after this..
