First Game: Ninja Gaiden (December 9, 1988)

As expected of a ninja, Ryu is very agile both on the air and the ground. Not only are his walk speeds and dashes are fast, he can also jump toward any wall and cling on it when needed. His mobility also allows him to sneak around projectiles and can keep the opponent guessing on what he'll do next. Some of his basic attacks have decent reach and combined with his shurikens and fire balls, he's good at pressuring and overwhelming the opponent.

...however, his own strengths are his own weaknesses. Ryu is a bit on the fragile side and while he can dodge attacks, throwing him into the corner makes it very hard for him to escape. While Ryu has a strong air game, he can't deal with jumping characters nearly as well. In terms of damage, he's not nearly as strong as some of the other characters so it takes a little longer to take down an opponent.
