highschool reunion AU where Al (America) literally takes a decade to work up the guts to give Juan (2p!Philippines) a promposal :’)

hcs:
- juan showing up in his old mathlete jacket and facing relentless teasing bc he’s barely grown since then
- al almost wearing one of those pastel blue tuxes, but everyone–everyone–wholeheartedly voices their concerns
- he still insists on wearing his old glasses for the sake of sentimentality despite his prescription being significantly worse than his highschool years (it’s okay, he’ll just suffer)
- jose being a good wingman and helping al set up a little private mini prom for them in the gym, complete with wahoo punch, one (1) balloon, and an ariana grande playlist blasting on his portable speakers
- jose surprising them with paper crowns, naming them prom kings and demanding that they dance to “perfect” by ed sheeran
- the speakers run out of battery so jose serenades them with his voice instead (he gets half the lyrics wrong and forgets the other half, tho, so he just hums for a hot minute, and the whole thing is a few notes off, but he’s trying his b e st - )
- juan cracking a grin because al can’t stop snickering as they sway like middle schoolers, tripping over each other’s feet and bumping knees
- al slowing to a stop halfway into the song and just staring at juan, dazed, unable to grasp that this moment, 10 years in the making, is finally coming true
- the fact that al still held feelings towards him during all those years where juan moved from relationship to relationship, trying (and failing) to get over his brother’s dorky best friend suddenly hits juan like a bullet, and suddenly in that moment of mingled breath and painfully long silence, juan is reaching up to press a short kiss on al’s jaw
- juan leaves al alone, breathless, in the middle of their highschool gym
- despite how much he denies it, juan spends all night staring at his phone, hoping it doesn’t take al another decade to work up the nerve to ask him on a first date
