Day 17
We reached Mauville City last night and were all exhausted from the excitement of yesterday that I barely finished my last entry before sleeping. So today we headed out to check out the city. It's quite an impressive metropolis with a beautiful park at the center, which the whole team enjoyed stretching out and exercising in. For lunch we decided to try out the Battle Food Court. It was... interesting.
They allow battles here, and purposely have limited seating so you have to fight to keep your seat while waiting for your meal to be served. Sadly I didn't know about this until I'd already ordered food; I'd rather relax to enjoy my meal, not fight to eat it. How am I supposed to enjoy it then?
Thankfully Mickey had little trouble guarding me and my seat. Mud can be an excellent deterrent in a food court. Afterward we scouted out the gym to discover they used electric types. Mickey and I both grinned, knowing this would be easy. And then we ran into Wally.
I last met Wally in Petalburg city and helped him catch a ralts, and now I found him trying to get into the gym, held back by his uncle, I think. In an attempt to convince his uncle he could manage it, Wally challenged me to fight him. I knew it wouldn't go well; the kid had one pokemon, though it did evolve, and still seemed terribly lacking in confidence. Mickey and I went easy on him, but still won. Wally was crushed, but then decided he wanted to be my rival, and would strive to be stronger. An admirable goal, and it made me think about the Mauville gym. What if they saw me the way I saw Wally? I did just have a rash of troubles on Route 110, so what if they continued and Mickey had trouble in that gym? That could turn deadly if we weren't careful.
Changing tactics I decided to head to Route 117, west of Mauville, to train. I found a daycare outside the walls of Mauville, and decided to leave Ursula there, so she could get stronger until I was ready to train her myself. There were tons of skilled trainers on the route, so we fought tough battles that definitely strengthened my team. Capaldi and Grawl both evolved because of their efforts. And we caught another pokemon, a strange bug called a volbeat. I named him Malcom, and he's a lot like Moof, I think. He'll stay in the PC for now. We came back to Mauville to sleep and tomorrow I think I'll visit Verdanturf Town at the end of Route 117. The more training, the better.
