There is a story behind this piece:
It was thirteen days ago, although it seemed like an eternity to her.
Thirteen days ago her father, the king of Eriannor, was murdered by a wizard, Argoth. She remembered the name, she had already heard her maids whisper it every now and then. For years Argoth was one of those legendary figures. The stories had it that he used to be a great wizard and a wise advisor of many kings on the Old Continent. Over the years though, his heart became spoilt with vaulting ambition and craving for power. Having connived with another wizard to overthrow the old kings, one by one, he soon started to carry out their plan. Little did they care about human lives. His fellow conspirator would often repeat to him, over and over again, that the end justifies the means and that together they would establish a new world order. Of course, better than those ridiculous kingdoms could ever come up with.
Soon Argoth managed to get into the castle on the Red Cliff with his small army and assassinate the king. Yet although the plan seemed to be easy and was going so far really smooth, it failed at one point. The people of Eriannor would not listen to the new ruler. The riots started and Argoth knew the only way to placate his subjects and avoid further fights was through the marriage of princess. Ravinne, perfectly aware of his next move, was trying to flee. However, as she was climbing the steep cliffs, Argoth caught up with her. He cursed her. From that moment on she would have her human form only during the day. With the setting sun, she was to transform into a raven. The curse would last until she make up her mind and marry Argoth. During the day he kept her locked in one of the many towers, only to change her prison for a small iron cage at night.
With help of one of her maids, she managed to escape. As soon as she was on the loose, she started concocting revenge against the wizard. At night she would fly and search high and low for creatures willing to help. Most of the people of Eriannor were too afraid to stand up to wizard and fight, only a small group of men decided to join her seemingly futile and desperate plan to overthrow Argoth. Everybody heard stories about his incredible powers and magical skills. And she needed help! The only creatures that would listen to her at night were ravens.
Why not to use ravens, she pondered and talked them into joining her army.
On the thirteenth day of her freedom, they all gathered on the Red Cliff, ready to fight and risk life and limb to punish the wizard. The men were told to use one of the secret passages that led into the castle while Ravinne would create a diversion. She had to guarantee that the wizard would have to go out on the small terrace and deal with the throng of ravens. The only hope was that the men would get inside the castle effortlessly and as quickly as possible and kill Argoth, who at that time would be too distracted and engaged in the fight with murderous ravens.
Now the day for revenge had come. For the first time in her life she felt that she could kill.
They had to give it a try. Ravinne hoped that the wizard would not want to hurt any raven for fear that he might kill the princess and lose the control over people of Eriannor altogether.
She climbed on one of the cliffs and settled down. As she was watching the sun go down, she felt the first waves of pain of her transformation. Two deep cuts between her shoulder blades showed first. Then her body would start shrinking and at last pitch black feathers and two great wings will grow. Her eyesight would sharpen and she would set out, seeking the wizard and revenge. If she could blind him, the group of warriors of Eriannor may stand a chance.
On that day the guardians of the castle were uneasy. They sensed something odd about the gathering throngs of black-feathered birds. Something dark and foreboding was about to take place.
The sense of foreboding was also growing on Argoth himself and he could not figure out why.
He was to find out soon.
