As each mile passesTravelling through the greening landscape
I retreat southward
Like a wounded animal
Retreating to familiar ground
Back to my lair
To places of years gone by
A sadness creeps in
Like the mist of rain
Falling gently outside my chariot
My eyes sting and fill
And the warmth of my tears
Spill over onto my cheeks
Still further south I travel
Through meandering hills
The forest begins to hug a road well travelled
And as I come closer to my destination
The sadness grows ever stronger
It twists within me
Wrenching at my soul
Even as I arrive at my destination
A hamlet in the heart of the forest
As I open the door and step out
Into the cool late afternoon
The smells and sounds of the forest air wash over me
And a surge of emotion fills me body and soul
With a sadness unimaginable
As I am hit with a wall of memories
Of all that is lost
