Description
Featuring Nhima , General Syn , and Saule (NPC)
Summer, Year 759 of the New Age
Silverthorne, the Silverwood
The healer who had served as her midwife had rushed off in such a hurry, there was no doubt in Saule’s mind that she was summoning somebody to come pass judgment on her newborn. The little filly nestled tightly against her was unusual, and Saule knew life would not be easy for her or her child, but only love filled her chest whenever she looked upon her babe. Was it wrong to love a child as ugly as this? Saule didn’t think so. But what Saule thought and what was decided by the leaders would be two very different matters.
Her reverie lasted a little less than an hour before she heard footsteps approaching. Steeling herself, she raised her head and curled protectively around her fawn. None other than General Syn broke through the brush, his face a mask of gravity. Saule felt her heart drop – the healer had summoned a general? Was it that serious?
Gulping, she watched as he picked his way slowly through the brush, a thousand different arguments on the tip of her tongue, ready to defend the fawn sleeping peacefully beside her.
“Saule.” The general said simply, the single word carrying the weight of a dozen different emotions; disapproval, concern, and perhaps just a touch of regret.
“Please, General. She’s only a baby! She has no guilt in thi—“
General Syn cut her off with a severe look before moving closer to inspect the sleeping child. With a tender touch, he nosed the fawn, checking for any obvious physical deformities. His inspection elicited a wide yawn from the filly, who was unaware that her life hung in the balance. General Syn gave a grunt of mild approval, finding the filly of sound body. With a quiet sigh, he breathed a flicker of flame over the fawn's ribs. She did not burn. Although the baby seemed to pass his scrutiny, he shook his head.
“It is an abomination, Saule. You cannot keep it. Its very hide is marked with its corruption. Let me end this.” He looked into Suale’s eyes and, in a low tone added, “I’ll make it quick. The fawn will feel nothing.”
Saule wrapped herself tighter around the speckled fawn. “No, please. Let me explain!” she plead, tears making her eyes bright. “She is pure. She is! Her hide is a sign of faith! Look at her, General. She is the dark of the night, and the brightness of the sun. Please, she will cause no trouble for the herd. She is blessed! You cannot kill her just because she is not beautiful. Being unattractive is no sin. Please!”
Her desperate pleas sounded thin, perhaps even outlandish, even to her. But it was clear that the mother loved her child, however unsightly that child was.
The general stared hard at the new mother and finally heaved a sigh. “We will see.” He said, turning away to leave the doe and her baby in peace.
