Description
The next day was my first day working as a barista. Maddison came to work early so that she could show me around the store. She showed me where everything was kept, what each machine did, and how to make coffee. "So, you're going to be making drinks for customers?" she asked. I nodded. "Well, let's get started then," she said, "you know how to use the espresso machine?" "of course," I replied, "I've used it many times before." "Good," she said, "then let's practice making some lattes." She gave me a cup of milk and a spoonful of sugar. I followed her instructions and soon had a latte ready. the foam setup on top locked exquisite and almost perfect and the light flavor of the coffee was perfect. "That looks great!" Maddison said, "Now let's do a cappuccino." I followed her instructions and soon had a steaming hot cup of coffee. "Now, let's try a macchiato," she said. I followed her instructions and soon had a foamy drink with a hint of chocolate. "Perfect!" she said, "you're doing really well." "Thanks," I said, "I'm glad you think so. I didn't think I would have retained my skills from a few years ago." "Don't worry about it," she said, "we all forget things sometimes. Now, let's try a caramel macchiato." I followed her instructions and soon had a steaming hot cup of coffee. "that will do, It looks and tastes perfect Sara." she said, "now make something for your own tastes and let's see how it goes." I followed her instructions and soon had a steaming hot cup of coffee. "It's good," I said, "but not quite as good as yours." "I don't mind," she said, "just keep practicing and you'll get better."Once the store was opened proper people came in all day to get various coffees and teas keeping me on my feet all day with their strange combinations. Around noon my aunt came in for a coffee and sat down at a table next to the counter. "Hello, Sara," she said, "how are you today?"
"I'm fine Auntie," I said, "and yourself?"
"I'm okay," she said, "what are you doing here?"
"this is where I work, I said I needed a job right?"
"Yes," she said, "but why here?"
"Because I wanted to," I said, "it's fun and I like working with coffee."
"You're very lucky to have such a nice place to work," she said, "I wish I could find a job like this instead of my office job. something fun you know?"
"Well, if you ever want to come in and talk to me about it, I'd love to hear what you have to say," I said, "I can give you advice or even help you apply for jobs."
"no Sara," she started, "I need the job that I have now to maintain my standard of living."
"Oh, I'm sorry," I said, "I didn't mean to upset you."
"No, no," she said, "don't worry about it. I just don't want to change my life around too much."
she finished her coffee and hugged me goodbye. I watched her leave and then went back to making drinks for customers.
After lunch, a group of four girls came in and ordered three lattes and a cappuccino. They were all pretty cute and I found myself staring at them as they talked amongst themselves. One of the girls noticed me watching her and gave me a smile. "What do you think?" she asked.
"I think you're really pretty," I replied, "you have a great smile."
She blushed and thanked me. "So, what brings you in here?" she asked.
"I'm working here," I said, "I needed a job and this seemed like a good one."
"Not 'here' but Holsteine, I've never seen you before."
"I lived in the city," I said, "I just moved here recently."
"Really?" she said, "where did you move from?"
"Annstone," I said, "my family lives there."
"That's not far," she said, "I grew up in Annstone."
"Yeah, I guess it isn't that far," I said, "so how long have you lived here?"
"About six months," she said, "I'm still getting used to the area."
"It takes a while to get used to a new place," I said, "I'm sure you'll be fine soon enough."
"Thanks," she said, "I hope so."
The girls finished their drinks and left. I cleaned up after them and went back to making drinks for customers. A few hours later, a couple came in and sat down at a table. They looked lovely together, the woman's mane of fiery red hair shone in the afternoon sun with a luster that reminded me of my mother's blonde hair, they talked for a few minuets before the man came to order their drinks. He ordered a double espresso and a cappuccino. The woman ordered a latte and a hot chocolate.
"How are you doing today?" he asked her.
"I'm okay," she said, "how are you?"
"Great!" he said, "this is my wife, Sarah."
"Nice to meet you," I said, shaking her hand.
"You too," she said, "we're going to be here for a while if you don't mind."
"let me know if you want anything else," I said, "I'll bring it over."
"No, thank you," she said, "I think we're good for now."
"Okay, well take care," I said.
They stayed for about an hour and then left. shortly after they left I was relieved for the day and returned to my aunt's house. I took a shower and changed into some pajamas. I lay in bed thinking about the girl who came to the coffee shop. I wondered what she would look like without her makeup and hair done. Would she be pretty or ugly? I fell asleep wondering.
